Sony has officially revealed the design of the PlayStation VR2's features and specifications were revealed in January 2022, alongside the announcement of a Horizon Forbidden West VR title that is in development for the hardware.
The PlayStation VR2's specs were originally revealed during CES 2022. The headset will feature an OLED display that manages 2000x2040 pixels per eye. The screen will have 4K HDR visuals, along with a 120 HZ refresh rate, while the headset will feature eye-tracking capabilities and haptic vibrations using the same technology present in the DualSense controller. The days of needing an external camera are over, as the PlayStation VR2 has cameras embedded into the headset.
Fans are aware of what the PlayStation VR2 is capable of, but its appearance was a mystery when the hardware was first introduced. The PlayStation VR2 controllers had been revealed, but this turned out to be an early design. Sony has finally revealed the final design for the PlayStation VR2 headset and controllers in a post on the official PlayStation Twitter page, with PlayStation Blog revealing additional details about the hardware and what it's capable of.
The design of the PlayStation VR2 resembles that of the PS5, with smooth white surfaces across the hardware. The headset will be lighter than the original PlayStation VR headset and it only requires a single wire to connect to the PS5. One big new addition to the headset is a vent that will prevent the lens from fogging up during play. The headset now features a lens adjustment dial, to allow the player to shift the distance of the lens from their eyes. These two additions should make the experience of playing games in VR a lot more comfortable. The PlayStation VR2 controller design now shares the PS5 aesthetic, as the original models that were presented had a dull grey color scheme.
There are still some key details about the PlayStation VR2 that fans need to know, with the most important being its price point, whether it's backward compatible with older games, and its release date. The two controllers share the same properties as the DualSense controller and the headset is filled with expensive tech, which means it's going to be expensive to produce. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony sell their consoles at a loss throughout the early years of their release, in order to entice fans to buy a system, so that they can make the money back off the games. Sony is showing confidence in VR and the PlayStation VR2 hardware looks incredible, but it could live and die by its price, and that's still key information that fans need to know.
The PlayStation VR2 is currently in development.
