The Pokémon Company has announced a new set of Pokémon trading cards, which will include a remake of Base Set Charizard, one of the most sought-after cards in the game. This year Pokémon celebrates its 25th anniversary, with everything from a music album to new mainline games in the works, and a TCG announcement is something fans have been waiting for.
Interest in the Pokémon Trading Card Game has only increased since launching in 1996, helped along more recently by content creators like Pokémon card appraisal companies, rating them on their quality or degradation, and confirming their authenticity.
While an original Base Set Charizard is a rare find, collectors will soon be able to get a remake of the card, as confirmed by The Pokémon Company. Pokémon Trading Card Game: Celebrations will "showcase beloved characters from the Pokémon franchise, as well as popular card artwork and gameplay mechanics spanning the history of the Pokémon TCG, such as Base Set Charizard." Promotional cards will also be available, and will "combine recently-discovered Pokémon with popular forms from previous Pokémon TCG sets, such as Light Pokémon, Delta Species (δ) Pokémon, and Pokémon Star."
Each booster pack in the collection will include four unique cards, all featuring foil treatments and a 25th anniversary logo. Pocket monsters showcased in the set will be from all regions of the Pokémon world, while characters like Professor Oak will also be returning. In addition, a subset of 25 cards, including Base Set Charizard, will be available. The Pokémon Company describes these as "close remakes of iconic cards." Collectors and players looking to buy Celebrations packs will probably have to move quickly, as TCG cards are in high demand. Earlier this year, some stores temporarily removed Pokémon cards from shelves over safety concerns, as demand for the collectables continues to soar.
The new series of Pokémon trading cards is likely to be one of the most popular yet, with the recreation of classic cards appealing to collectors old and new. Unfortunately, it's not yet clear whether or not The Pokémon Company will be able to keep up with what's expected to be high demand. While some older cards continue to climb in value, newer packs are becoming more scarce, and it's hoped Celebrations packs won't suffer from the same supply and demand problems. Many retailers across the world currently only allow booster packs to be bought in limited quantities, often restricting buyers to one pack of Pokémon cards per purchase.
