Summary
- Some Pokémon have type classifications that don't align with their appearance or name, which can be confusing.
- Generation 10 of Pokémon could bring an opportunity to correct these oversights and make the Pokémon more accurate and less confusing.
- Specifically, certain Pokémon that aren't Dragon-type are actual dragons.
Over the years and generations of Pokémon's history, there have been over 1,000 pocket monsters created or discovered and researched, but some of the Pokémon are left with type classifications that don't really make sense. Types provide stats and attacks to the Pokémon and signify general weaknesses and strengths in combat. Occasionally, however, some of the Pokémon come out looking like they should have been a different kind based on their appearance or name.
Generation 10 of Pokémon is bringing a lot of speculation of new Pokémon that could be added to the Pokédex with its iteration. The discovery of new creatures is standard practice with each new generation, but some are already in the Pokédex that deserve a little tweaking. Using the already shifting times of a new generation to correct some of these oversights could help make a few of these Pokémon more popular, or at least less confusing in some situations.
10 Gothitelle
Gothitelle, and its earlier evolutions of Gothita and Gothorita, is a Psychic-type Pokémon that has a weakness to Dark-type Pokémon. As their names are iterations of "Gothic" and they possess an overall dark look, it seems only natural that Gothitelle and its line would be a dual Psychic and Dark type. This omission would mean a large change in its combat values for strengths and weaknesses but would make more sense for the character itself.
9 Florges
At first glance, Florges clearly looks to be a giant flower. Designated as a Fairy-type, the general appearance of Florges suggests that it should also be included as a Grass-type, perhaps with a dual classification. Lower evolutions of Floette and Flabébé show that it was at that time a separate fairy-like creature that held a flower close to it, which makes more sense being a Fairy-type. When evolving into the Florges, however, as the Pokémon clearly becomes one with the flower and adding Grass-type to its stats would be understandable.
8 Nihilego
The Ultra Beast Nihilego is a Rock/Poison-type Pokémon that was introduced in Gen 7 as a parasite that arrives through a wormhole from another world. This floating jellyfish-like creature can justifiably be a Poison-type, but Rock-type does not make sense from its background. Supposedly, the classification comes from Nihilego being described in the Pokémon Sun & Moon Pokédex entry as "UB-01's body is composed of a glass-like substance." That said, glass and rocks are still quite different, and the overall flowing nature of Nihilego does not lend itself to an immediate thought of rocks.
7 Foongus
Foongus and its evolved Amoongus are dual Grass and Poison-type Pokémon that have the appearance of mushrooms. Mushrooms are not plants but rather are a type of fungi, unique in their characteristics from either plants or animals. As such, listing Foongus and Amoongus as Grass-type is not only incorrect but could lead to some confusion in younger generations about what a mushroom is. In Gen 10, these Pokémon should be altered to simply be Poison-type in order to be more accurate.
6 Spinda
The adorable Spinda is a red panda Pokémon that has some rabbit features and spiral eyes. The Pokémon is special, with nine different color patterns that can be found. Currently, Spinda is classified simply as a Normal-type and is said to have "confusing and scattering dance-like movements." With this habit of confusing its opponents and the spiral eyes that it is famous for, it seems that Spinda should be a Psychic-type rather than Normal, or at least be a mix of the two.
5 Charizard
A longtime common complaint has been the fact that Charizard is not a Dragon-type, as by his appearance, he is arguably the most dragon-like creature in the entire series. This Fire/Flying-type Pokémon is said to have been blocked from being a Dragon due to balance reasons, as having the statistics of Dragon-type added to it would make it a much more difficult opponent. Pokémon Scarlet & Violet briefly addressed this with a special Dragon Tera Type Charizard, but Gen 10 could make a more permanent alteration.
4 Psyduck
As a very obvious duck or platypus type creature, Water-type is very fitting for Pokémon's Psyduck. However, its constant headaches and psychic powers that come out in its attacks make it an obvious fit for being a dual Water and Psychic-type. Some have suggested that it does not hold that distinction due to its inability to control the psychic abilities it possesses; however, that does not diminish the fact that the psychic powers are still there.
3 Gyarados
As was the case with Charizard, Gyarados is listed as a dual Water and Flying-type Pokémon despite very obvious dragon features. Evolved from the Water-type Magikarp, Gyarados takes on the appearance of the Eastern-style limbless dragon and has even been a member of some notable Dragon-type Trainers teams, such as Lance and Clair. Changing Gyarados in Gen 10 to be a Water and Dragon-type would be much more fitting with the overall theme that Gyarados carries, despite the adjustments that may be required to prevent being overpowered.
2 Flygon
While many others on this list should receive the Dragon-type classification, little Flygon is already considered a Ground/Dragon-type Pokémon. There is nothing wrong with it being a little dragon; however, both Vibrava and Flygon are notably missing out on being Bug-types. Its lowest evolution of Trapinch makes the Ground-type understandable, but, after that point, the flying creatures are designed far more like bugs than a Ground/Dragon-type would suggest.
1 Celebi
Adorably cute, the Mythical Pokémon Celebi has been around ever since Gen 2 and serves as a guardian of Ilex Forest. It is a small creature with wings that is one of the closest resemblances to a traditional fairy that appears in the Pokédex, yet is not a Fairy-type. Celebi is classified as a Psychic and Grass-type despite its appearance and fairy-like habits and being a complete personification of a fairy in most cultures. This oversight could hopefully be corrected in Pokémon's Gen 10, particularly as many have wanted more focus made on Celebi for quite some time.
