catch some of the game’s strongest Pokémon to help them compete better in battles.

The game's community recently celebrated its annual Pokémon GO Fest event last month, and in spite of switching to an online-only, digital event due to the ongoing pandemic, the two-day festival garnered over $17 million, leading the Pokémon Company and Niantic to donate $5 million to charity. During the first day of Pokémon GO Fest 2020, the game brought in over $8.9 million, which is the second-largest amount the game has made in a single day since its launch in 2016. Despite all its success, the event did have some technical difficulties, which led Niantic to institute a one-day make-up event to allow everyone to experience the festivities.

In a new post on the Pokémon Go Blog, the developer announced that Pokémon spawn locations could change as often as every month going forward. In addition to increasing the number of spawn locations locations, the developers have also adjusted some of the more densely populated spawn areas and have spread them out to increase the number of locations where Pokémon can be found. This means that Pokémon may begin spawning in areas that were previously sparse or completely devoid of them, with the recent change nearly doubling the locations where Pokémon will appear.

“As the world changes in real time, so do the locations where Pokémon can appear around you. Locations where Pokémon can be found could change as often as every month, reflecting efforts by Trainers to explore the world around them and interact with the world of Pokémon GO.”

Having more spawn locations for Pokémon will allow players to catch more of them nearby or even from the comfort of their own homes or neighborhoods. Niantic also reiterated that Pokémon GO players are able to review nominations for new PokéStops and Gyms through the Niantic Wayfarer tool, provided they're level 38 or above, potentially making the game even more convenient in less dense areas.

It’s great that Niantic is making an effort to make the game more accessible to players during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Having more spawn locations in areas away from dense cities will definitely help players enjoy the game more often than they would previously. And having Pokémon spawn locations change regularly will help prevent the game from feeling too stale or repetitive. Hopefully, the developers will continue updating Pokémon GO with more ways for players to experience the game safely during the pandemic and beyond.
