sold 500,000 copies of Temtem a month after its release.
The looming arrival of the next generation of video game consoles has given plenty of game developers an opportunity to expand their audience and increase their market. Today, a State of Play showcase was streamed on PlayStation's YouTube channel that gave fans a look at a few titles coming to the PlayStation 5, as well as Crash Bandicoot 4 and Spelunky 2. While there weren't many highly anticipated titles discussed, there was still plenty of news to get fans interested.
One reason to get excited was new from the recent MMORPG success Temtem. environment traversal with grappling hooks, and online interaction with friends in a shared world. The game wears its Pokémon inspiration on its sleeve and this is very evident in the trailer, which will look familiar to fans of Nintendo's landmark franchise.
While Temtem has earned plenty of scorn online for being so plainly derivative of the iconic Pokémon series, it can't be denied that the game has plenty of fans. It hasn't been a great time for new MMORPGs, which are slowly being edged out by "MMO-Lite" titles like Warframe. Some are calling Temtem the first successful MMORPG of 2020. Given this success, it's understandable that the game would appear on PS5, despite its detractors.
It's often said that there is nothing new under the sun, and looking at the video game industry, it's easy to see why. The market is full of unique and creative titles but at the same time there are plenty of games that take heavy inspiration from classics that came before. Whole genres bear the names of the video games that defined them, be they Metroidvanias or the more recent trend of "Souls-likes" that grew out of the infamous and beloved Dark Souls franchise. But even if a game pays homage to (or even shamelessly copies) a well-known predecessor, that doesn't mean the newer games aren't perfectly fun in their own right. Titles like Temtem are just a new way for fans to experience more of their favorite styles of game, and with that in mind, there should be plenty of excitement for this fresh MMO to appear on the PlayStation 5.
Temtem is available now on PC.
