Eevee evolutions have been popular in Pokémon since Generation 1, with Jolteon, Flareon, and Vapereon. Since then, fans have had the likes of Espeon and Umbreon introduced in Generation II, Leafeon and Glaceon in Generation 4, and Sylveon in Generation 6. It's been 12 years since fans have gotten a new Eevee evolution, and the Pokémon franchise has been long overdue for one to appear.

Pokémon Day 2025 is coming quickly, scheduled for February 27. If a new Eevee evolution is coming soon, it's likely that fans will get a glimpse or tease of the latest evolution then, alongside news about Pokémon GO and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Until then, though, speculation on whether Pokémon is finally getting a new Eevee evolution is running rampant, fueled by some potential evidence fans have picked up on.

Why Fans Think A New Eeveelution Is On The Way

A Few Recent Hints Are Causing Fans To Speculate On New Eeveelutions

Speculation about a new type of Eeveelution is at an all-time high. Fans have several reasons to speculate and believe that Pokémon Day 2025 might bring the long-awaited reveal. The biggest indicator fueling this theory is the Pokémon Day giveaway. According to DualShockers, the giveaway is for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players and will run from February 7 to February 27. Codes will be available at certain retailers and, once claimed, players will be rewarded with a Flying Tera Type Eevee.

The problems for players attempting to collect this Pokémon TCG set have been present since day 1, but it doesn't look to be going away anytime soon.

The timing of the event is the most interesting part, as past Pokémon Day celebrations have often come hand-in-hand with major game announcements. Since Eeveelutions are a fan-favorite feature of the franchise, this particular giveaway seems like it could be more than just a random event. It might be a subtle teaser for something much bigger, like a new Eeveelution.

Another piece of evidence comes from the Pokémon Trading Card Game and its recent introduction of the Prismatic Evolutions set. This could signal that The Pokémon Company hasn't forgotten about Eevee's evolutionary potential. While the TCG often includes unique and creative concepts separate from the mainline games, it's not unlikely that Prismatic Evolutions could hint at something that will soon be introduced in the core series.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A was announced on February 27, 2024, and is slated for a release this year. While not much is known besides it taking place in Kalos' Lumiose City, Mega Evolutions have been teased to return.

There have previously been leaks of a flying-type Eeveelution that was put on hold during Generation 7. This leak comes from CentroLeaks on X (formerly Twitter). The fact that this concept has existed all along suggests that Game Freak has already considered the idea. With Pokémon Legends: Z-A and possibly Generation 10 on the horizon, it might finally be time for this lost evolution to make its debut.

With all this evidence stacking up, fans have every reason to be excited. Whether it happens in Pokémon Legends: Z-A or the next mainline Pokémon installment, the possibility of a new Eeveelution finally arriving feels more real than ever.

Legends: Z-A Would Make A Great Home For A New Eeveelution

Kalos Would Be An Ideal Setting For Eevee's Next Transformation

Sylveon was the last Eeveelution introduced in Pokémon, and that was in Pokémon X and Y, home to the Kalos region. Since Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set in Lumiose City, which is the heart of the Kalos region, it would make sense to add a new Eeveelution here, and be a fitting nod to the last generation that expanded Eevee's evolutionary line.

Pokémon players over the years have found a lot of ways to keep the series interesting by making their own games. Some even rival mainline games.

Another reason Legends: Z-A would be an excellent home for a new Eeveelution is that the game is already expected to break new ground in the Pokémon franchise. The Legends series started with Pokémon Legends: Arceus, a game that took significant steps away from the standard mainline game mechanics. Legends: Arceus focused more on exploration, history, and lore, rather than following the traditional Gym Badge and Elite Four structure.

Legends: Z-A will likely follow the same path as its predecessor, introducing more story elements that could align perfectly with introducing a new Eeveelution. One example would be to include a new method of evolution tied to Kalos and center some of the story around that. Kalos was also the first region to introduce Fairy-types, with Sylveon being a main selling point. Legends: Z-A could use this opportunity to showcase a brand-new type for Eevee, if not the scraped Flying-type from before.

Introducing a new Eeveelution would also be a huge selling point for Legends: Z-A, especially given how popular Eevee and its evolutions are, and the spin-off series already introduced new regional forms and evolutions with Pokémon Legends: Arceus' Hisuian forms. So, a new Eeveelution in Legends: Z-A could follow this trend by adding a unique twist and game mechanics to Eevee's evolutionary line.

Why A New Eevee Evolution In Legends: Z-A Isn't Likely

Historically Speaking, Eevee Evolutions Are More In Line With Mainline Titles

It's fun to theorize, speculate, and look for clues that might indicate a new Eeveelution is coming. While it would be incredible to see a new evolution debut in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, there are several reasons why this might not be the case.

The biggest indication as to why this theory isn't likely is the fact that Legends: Z-A is more of a spin-off without the traditional dual-version structure, and, historically speaking, new Eeveelutions have only ever debuted in mainline titles. As groundbreaking as Legends: Arecus was, it would also have been the perfect opportunity for a new Eeveelution, yet no new Eeveelution was introduced. This could suggest Game Freak prefers to save them for mainline games and focus on introducing newer traditions and gameplay elements.

Who Could The Main Villain Of Pokémon Legends: Z-A Be Related To?

One big mystery surrounding Pokémon Legends: Z-A is who the main villain could be related to, and there are numerous interesting possibilities.

Eeveelutions have always been introduced alongside significant game mechanics. Espeon and Umbreon came with the day-and-night cycle, Leafeon and Glaceon required specific locations, and Sylveon was tied to the new Fairy-type. That said, these types of gameplay mechanics might be too intricate to introduce in a Legends game. Game Freak might prefer to save them for Generation 10 and newer regions.

While the Flying Tera Type Eevee giveaway is intriguing, it does not necessarily confirm a new evolution. Tera Types allow Pokémon to take on different types without actually evolving, so this giveaway could be a thematic tie-in rather than a teaser. Fans hoping for a new Eeveelution might be reading too much into this, especially since Pokémon has a history of seemingly hinting at things that will never come to be.

Lastly, Pokémon Legends: Z-A may have other priorities. The focus of the game might be more on exploring Kalos’ past, uncovering the history of Mega Evolutions, or expanding on the lore of Pokémon like Zygarde. If the game is primarily centered around Legendary Pokémon and historical world-building, there may not be room for a major feature like a brand-new Eeveelution.

The idea of a new Eeveelution appearing in Legends: Z-A is exciting, but it will likely occur in the next mainline Pokémon title. Nothing is confirmed, though, so fans will have to wait until Pokémon Day 2025 to potentially see whether their theories hold up.
