Though her dream was to become a Pokémon Coordinator, May still made quite the name for herself as a trainer. Having her fair share of eclectic Pokémon on her team, she had everything from fire-types to ice-types and so much more.
Knowing that May did not necessarily want to own any Pokémon at the beginning of her time on the series makes it all the more special seeing how far she has come in her skills and relationships with her Pokémon. While all of her sidekicks make great fighters and companions, let's look at how they rank in of power and significance.
Skitty
Coming in at last place is Skitty, who initially ed May's team because she was struck by its cuteness, given that even its top battle ability is Cute Charm. However, Skitty surprisingly proved itself as a staple companion to May, and their bond will forever be adorable.
The kitten-inspired Pokémon performs pretty average on the battlefield, so it is not too essential to May's team as a powerhouse fighter. However, Skitty is a pretty iconic Pokémon in general, and fans still enjoy the Skitty sightings whenever it pops up in the various series.
Munchlax
As the preceding form to Snorlax, this big and lazy companion was sort of an unexpected choice for May. Though she did not start as a Pokémon expert and fans did not expect her to pick an all-perfect team, many viewers were a little lost when it came to her strategy with Munchlax.
Though Munchlax might not be everyone's first choice, it actually isn't too shabby in battle. The "Big Eater" Pokémon has quite the high HP, with its Attack and Special Defense skills coming in at a close second. With abilities like Pickup and Thick Fat, Munchlax is definitely an entertaining one to watch.
Wurmple/Silcoon/Beautifly
By far one of the cutest flying-type Pokémon, Beautifly is perfect for May's team, personality-wise and fighting-wise. In the animated series, it's often a pattern that flying types typically do quite well in battle, even if their strength isn't necessarily mirrored in the games. Though it isn't the strongest on its own, the "Butterfly Pokémon" was the one who made May realize her dreams of becoming a Pokémon coordinator in the first place, so its significance in the series is pretty huge.
However, between its maneuvers like Swarm and Rivalry, its Special Attack abilities aren't too shabby against other competitors. Although Beautifly's preceding forms of Wurmple and Silcoon aren't the best, most powerful battlers, it's clear that once the Pokémon became fully evolved, Beautifly and May were destined to be partners.
Squirtle/Wartortle
As one of the core starters, Squirtle and its evolutions are by far one of the most iconic Pokémon of all time. With its final evolution, Blastoise, being one of the strongest water types ever, it's easy to see why any trainer would benefit from having a Squirtle on their team.
The turtle-inspired Pokémon is quite impressive at every stage, with its unique water moves including Torrent and Rain Dish. With its high Defense abilities and its undying adorable factor, it's no secret that both Squirtle and Wartortle are common fan-favorite Pokémon for many reasons.
Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Venusaur
Another famous starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur is quite the unique combination of dual types, grass and poison. Having this Pokémon and its evolutions was another wise choice made by May, as you can't go wrong with the simple yet complex first generation.
This "Seed Pokémon" specializes in its Special Attack as well as its Special Defense, with its other base stats trailing not too far behind. From its unique attributes of a blooming plant bulb on its back to its Overgrow and Chlorophyll powers, there's no question as to why this Pokémon and its evolutions are so pined after in the training community. Not only do they make great competitors on the battlefield, but they make for great pals, too!
Eevee/Glaceon
Next comes Eevee, who hatched from May's egg and traveled with her from the very beginning, and later evolved into Glaceon. Though Glaceon doesn't rank too high among other Eevee evolutions, it's still an all-around impressive Pokémon above all. Ice-types aren't always recognized as powerful compared to fire-types, for example, but a trainer really cannot go wrong with any of the nine Eevee evolutions.
However, its special attack ability is beyond high, and its other general stats aren't too shabby either. With unique moves like Snow Cloak and Ice Body, the "Fresh Snow" Pokémon is definitely among May's most powerful battlers and travel companions.
Torchic/Combusken/Blaziken
The highest evolution of Torchic, Blaziken, is without a doubt one of the strongest fire types of all time, and May scored big time with having it in her roster, much less as her first Pokémon ever. Though Torchic was a bit inexperienced when it came to fighting, at first, fans are glad May stuck with the Pokémon, as it turned out to be very rewarding for her in the end. From its baby chick form to its full-blown intensely strong form, it's been a blast for fans to watch the Pokémon's immense growth in not only strength but confidence and overall skills.
Between its unique build and its clear strength, Blazekin and its preceding forms are fantastic partners to have. Considering both Torchic and Combusken already have great Attack abilities to begin with, it's no wonder Blaziken's Attack stats would skyrocket, along with its overall HP and Defense. All in all, it's impossible to go wrong with an all-powerful fire/fighting dual-type like Blaziken, and May will forever be praised for her ability to evolve such an iconic Pokémon.
