Koraidon and Miraidon will be introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Legendaries seem to effectively convey each game's themes, the powerful creatures are exacerbating an ongoing issue with Legendary Pokémon.
Like each previous generation, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will each include an exclusive Legendary Pokémon for players to acquire. Pokémon Scarlet is expected to focus on the distant past of the Paldea region, with players receiving training from the old-school Professor Sada. The title's Legendary, Koraidon, will reflect this theme with its vibrant coloration and design that reflects ancient birds or dinosaurs. Pokémon Violet, meanwhile, will give Paldea a futuristic theme through the high-tech wardrobe of Professor Turo. Miraidon will also serve to reflect this futuristic theme, given the Legendary's electrical motif and neon LED eyes. Players will also be able to ride Koraidon and Miraidon during gameplay, making the Gen 9 Legendaries both fashionable and functional.
While Kiraidon and Miraidon look like fascinating pocket monsters, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is making an ongoing Legendary Pokémon issue even worse. In the series' earliest entries, Legendary Pokémon were incredibly rare and had an air of mystery surrounding them. However, every new Pokémon generation adds multiple new Legendaries to the lineup, which has slowly diluted their rarity and made them feel less special. The intrigue of encountering a powerful new Legendary is totally lost because there are now dozens for players to encounter, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are adding two more to the roster. Mythical Pokémon like Mew and Arceus, which are meant to be even rarer than Legendaries, also suffer from this problem.
A Third Tier of Rare Pokémon Could Make Legendaries Rare Again In Gen 9
To avoid adding more Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, the franchise could possibly add a new tier of rare Pokémon in Gen 9 to help break up the roster. This tier could possibly be more common than Legendary or Mythic but rarer than typical Pokémon, letting The Pokémon Company add to it with more frequency. This would reserve the Legendary and Mythical tiers for truly rare and powerful Pokémon, perhaps introducing only one or two per generation. Alternatively, Pokémon could introduce a tier of pocket monster that's even more rare than Legendary or Mythical, giving players a new ultra-rare creature to hunt and collect. This would return a sense of mysticism to the franchise without getting rid of already popular Legendaries and Mythicals.
Many fans feel that Pokémon keeps producing bad Legendaries, but the greater problem seems to be the sheer overabundance of rare creatures. Having too many rare Pokémon ironically makes them less rare, and Scarlet and Violet are only adding to this problem with Kiraidon and Miraidon. By adding another tier of rare Pokémon, the franchise could possibly fix this issue moving into future installments.
