Summary

  • Ogerpon and Terapagos have opposing relationships with the Stellar Tera Type, making them a complementing pair in the game.
  • There is a possibility that future distributions or additions to the game could change the current restrictions on the Stellar Tera Type for these Legendaries.
  • Ogerpon and Terapagos are designed to mirror each other in various ways, including their mechanics, genders, and encounters in the game.

The new Legendaries introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s DLC are undeniably connected in a subtle but clever way. A wide array of Legendaries can be caught in Scarlet and Violet through the new content, both as their franchise debut and returning from previous games. But alongside the many other lore reveals introduced in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, it seems that very careful consideration has gone into how Ogerpon and Terapagos compare to each other.

As with any new Generation’s core games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduce new Legendaries to the series. Moreover, through the addition of DLC for the games, even more Legendary and Mythical Pokémon have been introduced than in most other Pokémon Generations, such as the long-foreshadowed Terapagos. paradoxical lore for Scarlet and Violet’s mascot Legendaries, ensuring that they are not left behind even as the Pokédex expands further. Nevertheless, both The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk naturally focus strongly on their own respective new Legendaries.

Ogerpon & Terapagos Have Opposing Relationships With Stellar Tera Type

A Pokémon trainer with a Clefairy facing off against Ogerpon Terastallized with the Teal Mask.

Likely due to her masks having a similar effect, Ogerpon cannot have her Tera Type changed as most Pokémon can in Scarlet and Violet at the Treasure Eatery. And, in addition to this, Terapagos’ Tera Type cannot be changed either, meaning that he always has the Stellar Type. This, in turn, means that Ogerpon is the only Pokémon in the franchise that cannot have the Stellar Tera Type, while Terapagos cannot have any other. As a result, the two Legendaries complement each other perfectly.

Although the game data for Terapagos shows that it is technically possible for the Legendary to be a female, the Pokémon discovered in the Area Zero Underdepths is scripted to be male.

Future Distributions Could Change The Stellar Tera Type’s Current Pokémon Restrictions

Of course, there is always a possibility that this status quo may change in the future, whether through event distributions or even either Legendary’s inclusion in a future title. There are many ways in which this could lead to a future example of Ogerpon or Terapagos breaking the current symmetry of their in-game statuses, such as Ogerpon receiving a new mask which confers the Stellar Tera Type. But on the other hand, this would essentially be new content added after the fact; ultimately, Scarlet and Violet’s DLC Legendaries, as they appear in-game, will always mirror each other.

It is interesting to see how well Oegerpon and Terapagos compare and contrast with each other. Both Legendary Pokémon have a unique relationship with the Terastal phenomenon; Ogerpon has her unique mask-based forms, and Terapagos has more recently introduced the Stellar Tera Type as its signature (although not unique) trait, which creates a distinct pair of opposing mechanics. Combined with the fact that even their genders are fixed opposites for their respective encounters, it is clear that the two primary Legendaries of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s DLC are designed to mirror each other even in the smallest of ways.
