A Pokémon Sword and Shield discovery baffled players in how it explains the names of the games and DLC. Pokémon Sword and Shield was how the eighth generation of Pokémon started, and 2022 will soon see the release of the ninth generation. The eighth-generation had its share of ups and downs with its mainline entries, with Pokémon Legends: Arceus being extremely well received by many fans.

The base game of Pokémon Sword and Shield was riddled with controversy up to its release due to the cut of the national dex. Following the base game, the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC were released, which each provided a new wild area to explore filled with returning Pokémon that weren’t in the base game. The Crown Tundra also added several new variants and legendary Pokémon. Both DLC packs were overall better received than the base game due to the amount of new content added.

A post from Reddit Renelie89 shows the reason why the games are named the way they are in the statue depicting the hero of Galar. The obvious observation is that the hero is holding a sword and a shield, but the picture also points out the fact that he is covered in armor and wearing a crown could be why the DLC packs are called the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra. All of which are tools befitting that of a knight. The reaction to this revelation has fans in the comments surprised and dumbfounded.

The next generation of Pokémon was recently announced when Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were finally revealed. From the first trailer, it looks as though these games will take some inspiration from Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are described to be “open-world” games, but how much of an open-world the games will actually feature remains to be seen.

Not much about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is known from its first trailer. Not its gameplay style, not the legendaries, and not the reason for the names of these titles. Mascot legendaries are usually revealed with the first showcase of a new mainline Pokémon game, so not seeing them right away is definitely unusual. But the three new Pokémon starters revealed in the trailer have gained popularity for their designs, and the starters along with the setting being in Spain could possibly be a clue for the game’s overall theming. Pokémon has gone through several different types of naming schemes over the generations such as letters, colors, jewels, and objects. What theme Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have to offer will remain to be seen in due time.
