Warning: Spoilers for Power Girl #2

Summary

  • Power Girl may have found her most prominent and complicated romantic relationship yet with Axel Gust, who is revealed to be a CIA agent or something even greater.
  • It is still unclear what profession Axel Gust is in and who he works for, but his mysterious career adds intrigue and sparks flirtatious chemistry with Power Girl.
  • Axel Gust could be either a James Bond-level super spy or a cat burglar on the level of Catwoman, making him an anti-hero match for Power Girl. However, his involvement will likely complicate Power Girl's already complicated life.

A new Bond-esque love interest is emerging for Power Girl. Power Girl doesn't have a long history of notable romantic relationships, but if a romance truly blossoms between these two, Power Girl may be in store for her most prominent — and most complicated — relationship to date.

Her potential new beau arrives in the form of Axel Gust, and the two speak for the second time in Power Girl #2 by Leah Williams, Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Becca Carey. Except, as the issue goes to show, Axel Gust is no ordinary citizen of Metropolis. Instead, he seems to be a CIA agent, if not something far greater.

Either way, his profession is likely to conflict with Kara Zor-L's virtues regarding truth, justice, and the American way.

Power Girl's New Love Interest Could Be a CIA Agent - or Worse

Power Girl meets Axel Gust

In the first issue of Power Girl's newest ongoing series, Axel Gust introduces himself to Power Girl's tech-savvy alter ego, Dr. Paige Stetler. He attempts to recruit Paige for his "organization" — without ever specifying exactly what his organization is or what they do, not even on his business card. Paige immediately pegs him as working for the CIA, which he neither confirms nor denies. Power Girl #2 sees Axel attempt to recruit Paige again over the phone, only this time while he's having a shootout over a mysterious artifact.

It still isn't clear exactly what Axel Gust does for a living, who he's working with, or who he's working for. It's also not totally clear that he'll be the love interest for this run, though the flirtatious sparks are certainly flying. There is a chance that the answer to Gust's mysterious career is exactly what Paige assumes: he may, in fact, be in the CIA. However, the series constantly mentioning and speculating, through Paige's dialogue, that he's CIA makes the conclusion almost too obvious. Through a process of elimination, it's possible he's not d with the CIA at all. Judging from what readers see in this new issue, these new signs may be pointing to Gust being a James Bond-level super spy working with a network of spies.

Power Girl's Perfect Match: A Catwoman-Like Anti-Hero

Alternatively, he could also be a cat burglar on the level of Catwoman. It's still early in the story, so there is still much to speculate. In either case, the signs seem to point to Axel Gust becoming the anti-heroic Catwoman to Power Girl's Batman. Their chemistry comes off as witty and playful; sometimes, that's enough to create the building blocks for a romance in the superhero world. On one hand, it's definitely one way to spice up a romantic life that's been virtually non-existent for Power Girl. On the other, having either a cat burglar or a murderous super spy for a boyfriend is likely to complicate Power Girl's life even more than it already is.
