A sea of comic book fanboys have had their interest piqued by circulating rumors of DC Comics' uncertain future, and one comic book writer has ed them in stating a rather bold possibility of his own: joking about crowdfunding the character Power Girl.

Modern comic books media today is filled with behemoth companies all scrabbling for a piece of the pie. With money and eyes shifting towards film franchises and big Hollywood dollars, unfounded rumors have begun circulating about a possible DC Comics buyout of a very specific nature. One particular comic news source wrote about whispered claims about DC Comics getting rid of printed altogether, hinting that the rumors are a dangerous portent of a folding company.

The possibility of buying back comic divisions, or even simply character rights, has some comic book creators perking up in their seats. Among these is Jimmy Palmiotti and his wife and collaborator, Amanda Conner, who tweeted, “If it happens- Amanda and I will raise money through crowd funding to buy the rights to POWERGIRL. Who is with us?” Palmiotti and Connor previously wrote for the character back in 2009, and clearly found joy in the work enough to throw their metaphorical hat in the ring.

DC Comics

Power Girl is a familiar face for long-time DC Comics readers, but Palmiotti and Connor gave her a breath of fresh air in 2009, introducing the character to a new generation of comic readers and giving her room to play in her own, personal comics run. The team infused the character with humor and filled the pages with splashy, primary colors that made reading the series joyful and memorable. It’s clear that the duo enjoyed working and playing with the character, so it’s no wonder that they would have an interest in holding onto the character if a buyout as wild and dispersed as one site suggested.

With no PR statements, it’s difficult to say whether any of this possible - although it's extremely unlikely. It's doubtful buying and selling of comic properties or divisions is actually going to happen. In the nebulous comic book market, Warner Bros. could possibly be eyeing handing over the operation of DC’s comics division to separate outside investors, if the price is right, but there are so many hurdles to make that happen it's next to impossible. Still, comic fans, and even a respected comic writing and illustrating team can fantasize about owning characters. Regardless, if things do manage to head that direction for DC Comics and Warner Bros., there will be plenty of people chipping in to see more of Palmiotti and Conner’s bright Power Girl comics.
