Jason Lee Scott and Tommy Oliver are Power Rangers’ most iconic Rangers, but which one of them was the strongest Ranger is a complicated question. Jason was one of the five teenagers with attitude recruited by Alpha and Zordon in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season 1, episode 1, “Day of the Dumpster.” Tommy, on the other hand, was introduced in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season 1, episode 20, “Green With Evil, Part I.” Jason was the first of many Power Rangers’ Red Rangers, most of which led their respective teams. Tommy was both the first evil Ranger and the first sixth Ranger in Power Rangers history.
Red Rangers represent something special to the franchise. The Red Ranger is usually a fearless, trustful leader who will always fight to protect their team. Almost 30 years after Mighty Morphin, Jason remains one of the best, if not the best, Power Rangers' Red Rangers. However, Mighty Morphin’s Green Ranger introduced an exciting trope in which the sixth or extra Ranger is usually cooler and stronger than the rest of the team. That said, the comparison between Jason and Tommy in Power Rangers goes beyond Mighty Morphin and must take into consideration multiple seasons, crossover, and other bits of Power Rangers lore.
Red Ranger Jason Defeated Green Ranger Tommy In Mighty Morphin
Mighty Morphin’s Green Ranger was introduced as the evil Ranger who was powerful enough to take on all five Rangers at the same time. The first of many evil Power Rangers that followed a similar trope, Green Ranger Tommy appeared to be far more powerful than all five Rangers combined. Moments like the Green Ranger appearing inside the Rangers’ Megazord and defeating them one by one quickly shifted the show’s power scale and changed the show forever. Still, the Green Ranger was not invincible. Tommy’s evil Green Ranger powers had limitations, and he was eventually defeated by Red Ranger Jason.
Jason beat Tommy at the end of the “Green With Evil” arc. By defeating the Green Ranger, Jason helped Tommy break free of Rita Repulsa’s spell and brought him into the team. It was surprising to see Red Ranger Jason defeat Green Ranger Tommy considering how their original encounter had played out. Still, the fact is that Jason defeated Tommy in their most important battle. This suggests that Red Ranger Jason was more powerful than Green Ranger Tommy in Mighty Morphin. When it comes to their skills without the Ranger powers, Jason and Tommy always seemed to be on the same level.
White Ranger Tommy Was More Powerful Than Red Ranger Jason
Jason may have been more powerful than Tommy at the beginning of Mighty Morphin, but Tommy eventually became the Power Rangers’ strongest Ranger. As the Green Ranger’s powers began to fade away, Tommy’s future as a Power Ranger was put in check. Even though Zordon and Billy helped Tommy be the Green Ranger a little longer, the Green Ranger powers eventually ceased to exist. However, Tommy soon reed the Power Rangers as the White Ranger, which was stronger than the Green Ranger. Tommy was chosen by Zordon to receive the White Light, an immense source of power that only a worthy fighter could use.
Tommy replaced Jason as the Power Rangers’ new leader as soon as the former Green Ranger received his White Light powers. From a behind-the-scenes standpoint, Tommy became Power Rangers’ new leader in “White Light, Part II” because Jason, Trini, and Zack were set to be written out of the show. Having Tommy as the new leader was only logical, and the story established that the White Ranger was stronger than the Red Ranger. After Jason left the Power Rangers, White Ranger Tommy was by far the most powerful and skillful member of the team. This remained unaltered until Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ended.
Tommy And Jason Were Equals In Power Rangers Zeo
When it comes to Power Rangers’ comic book lore, Jason was the Omega Red Ranger during the events of Mighty Morphin season 3. However, in of Power Rangers’ TV canon, Jason only returned to the story in the final Power Rangers Zeo episodes. Now that the original Zeo Gold Ranger could not use his powers, Tommy went on a quest to find someone worthy of becoming the new Zeo Gold Ranger. In a surprising moment, Jason reunited with his Power Rangers friends and became the Zeo Gold Ranger, which was more powerful than the Mighty Morphin Red Ranger.
Generally, every Zeo Power Ranger was stronger than their Mighty Morphin counterpart. “Stronger than before,” the Zeo Rangers harnessed their powers from the Zeo crystals, one of the biggest sources of energy in the Power Rangers universe. As such, Zeo Ranger 5 Red was arguably the strongest of Tommy Oliver’s Power Rangers forms. Still, from the moment Jason became the Zeo Gold Ranger, he and Tommy became equals. Power Rangers Zeo was the last Power Rangers season in which both Jason and Tommy participated, excluding crossover episodes. From then on, comparing the two Power Rangers legends becomes slightly more difficult.
Tommy’s Power Rangers History Was Longer Than Jason’s
After Zeo, Tommy would continue to lead the Power Rangers as the Turbo Red Ranger. Jason returned for Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, but the original Red Ranger no longer had Ranger powers. Therefore, it is safe to say that Tommy was more powerful during that particular time. Jason became able to use his original Mighty Morphin powers at some point between the Turbo movie and Power Rangers Wild Force, as seen in Power Rangers’ Red Ranger crossover “Forever Red.” A similar thing happened to Tommy, who morphed into his Zeo Red Ranger form in “Forever Red.” Still, when it comes to their Power Rangers' legacies, Tommy’s sures Jason’s.
In Power Rangers’ TV canon, Jason appeared in four different shows and used two different Ranger forms. Tommy, however, appeared in eight Power Rangers seasons and morphed into five different Ranger forms. Tommy was also the leader of four different Power Rangers teams, including the one in Power Rangers Dino Thunder. Dino Thunder saw Tommy as an older Ranger mentoring a new generation of heroes, cementing his role as a Power Rangers legend. Likewise, Tommy led legacy Rangers in Power Rangers Super Mega Force’s “Legendary Battle” and Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel’s “Dimensions in Danger.”
Power Rangers’ “Dimensions in Danger” crossover introduced Tommy’s Master Morpher. Power Rangers’ Master Morpher allowed Tommy to use all of his previous Ranger powers, from Mighty Morphin’s Green Ranger to Dino Thunder’s Black Ranger. As far as Power Rangers has revealed, Tommy is the only Ranger who possesses a Master Morpher, especially because no one has been that many different Rangers in the TV canon. This helps conclude that, after decades of stories, Tommy was Power Rangers’ most powerful Ranger. With multiple powers and forms at his disposal, Tommy sured every other Power Ranger, including the also iconic Ranger Jason.
