Power Rangers changing colors happens quite often in the Power Rangers universe. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers introduced audiences to five easily recognizable heroes in the colors red, yellow, blue, black, and pink. From then on, each Power Rangers series has had a unique set of Rangers. Though Power Rangers characters changing their colors for a new series was more common during the Zordon Era, it continues to happen. The Zordon Era refers to the period between Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Power Rangers in Space. These Power Rangers seasons were heavily interconnected, with several actors from the previous shows returning for the new ones. After Power Rangers in Space, Rangers changing their colors ahead of a new season or series became rare. Here is a breakdown of 12 times Power Rangers changed their colors in TV canon. Neither the Power Rangers comics’ continuity nor Power Rangers Super Megaforce’s Legacy transformations were considered for this list.
12 Tommy (Mighty Morphin Green To Mighty Morphin White)
Original Green Ranger Tommy Oliver is a very special character for many reasons. Not only was Tommy the first “sixth Power Ranger,” but he was also the first Ranger to change colors. After losing the Green Ranger powers, Tommy Oliver became the Mighty Morphin White Ranger. Tommy had distanced himself from the Power Rangers after losing his Green Ranger powers, believing he could no longer help his friends. That changed once Zordon and Alpha offered Tommy the White Light. One of the most powerful sources of energy in the Power Rangers universe, the White Light created the White Ranger.
11 Tommy (Mighty Morphin White To Zeo Red)
Tommy Oliver’s unique Power Rangers journey continued in Power Rangers Zeo. After leading the Power Rangers as the White Ranger for almost two seasons, it was time for Tommy to become the Red Ranger. Most of the Mighty Morphin Rangers from season 3 returned for Zeo, some in new colors. Though there was a Green Ranger in Chouriki Sentai Ohranger, having Jason David Frank’s Tommy as the new Red Ranger made way more sense. Even though Rocky was also returning, Tommy was already the face of the franchise at that point. Which Tommy Oliver Power Rangers form was the strongest – White Light or Zeo Red – is open for debate.
10 Rocky (Mighty Morphin Red To Zeo Blue)
Rocky replaced Jason, the original Red Ranger, in Mighty Morphin season 2. Still, Rocky was never the team’s leader, as the Stone Canyon Rangers were inexperienced compared to Billy, Kimberly, and Tommy. Therefore, when Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ended and Zeo began, Tommy as the new Red Ranger was an obvious decision. Rocky continued to be an important part of the team, now as Zeo Ranger 3 Blue. While Rocky’s change from Red to Blue could be seen as a demotion, the character shined better in Zeo than in Mighty Morphin. Unfortunately, when the Power Rangers shifted into Turbo, Rocky did not return as the Blue Ranger.
9 Adam (Mighty Morphin Black To Zeo Green)
Adam replaced Zack as Mighty Morphin’s Black Ranger after “The Power Transfer.” Like Rocky and Aisha, Adam lacked experience on the battlefield. However, by the end of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Adam was a key team member. Chouriki Sentai Ohranger didn’t have a Black Ranger, so Adam now needed a new color. With Tommy as the Red Ranger and Billy out of the team, Adam became Zeo’s Green Ranger. Adam would repeat his green color in Power Rangers Turbo before ing the torch to Carlos in Turbo season 2. Though Adam eventually returned to the Power Rangers universe, he morphed into Mighty Morphin Black rather than Zeo or Turbo Green.
8 Jason (Mighty Morphin Red To Zeo Gold)
Jason, the original Red Ranger, has a legacy of his own in the Power Rangers universe. While the original Red Ranger exited Power Rangers during season 2, Jason remains one of the most popular Power Rangers characters. Power Rangers Zeo had many surprises, including Jason’s return toward the show’s ending. Now that the first Zeo Gold Ranger couldn’t use their powers, Jason was recruited by Tommy to become the new Zeo Gold Ranger. Zeo flipped Jason and Tommy’s dynamic, as the former was now the sixth Ranger while the latter was the team’s leader. Gold Power Rangers are not that common, making Jason’s second Ranger color even more special.
7 T.J. (Turbo Red To Space Blue)
T.J. replaced Tommy as the Turbo Red Ranger ahead of Power Rangers Turbo season 2. T.J. led the team until Turbo’s ending, after which the Power Rangers went to space. Power Rangers in Space introduced Andros, a new character who already had Red Ranger powers. T.J. became the Space Blue Ranger, and Andros rose up as the team’s leader. Initially, the Power Rangers of Earth continued to follow T.J. as their leader, but Andros eventually gained everyone’s trust. Despite becoming the Blue Ranger in Space, T.J. returned as the Turbo Red Ranger in the memorable “Forever Red” crossover episode.
6 Carlos (Turbo Green To Space Black)
Denji Sentai Megaranger’s colors were a bit different from Chouriki Sentai Ohranger's. As a result, former Turbo Green Ranger Carlos became the Space Black Ranger. Later on the show, Carlos got to team up with his former Green Ranger mentor Adam, now both as Black Rangers. The Turbo crew was the last Power Rangers cast to return to an all-new series before the franchise started to rotate the cast every two seasons. This trope now ends with the Dino Fury Rangers returning for Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. Turbo Yellow Ranger Ashley and Turbo Pink Ranger Cassie kept their colors during the transition into Power Rangers in Space.
5 Tommy (Zeo Red To Dino Thunder Black)
Power Rangers Dino Thunder confirmed Tommy Oliver’s status as a Power Rangers legend. After leading the team in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo, and Power Rangers Turbo, Tommy made a surprising comeback in Dino Thunder. Following his cameo in Wild Force, Jason David Frank became part of Dino Thunder’s recurrent cast. First, Tommy served as the “Zordon figure” to Connor, Ethan, and Kira, who didn’t know Dr. Oliver was once a Power Ranger himself. The Dino Thunder Rangers eventually learned Dr. Oliver’s Ranger history, and Tommy morphed into the Dino Thunder Black Ranger. Tommy guiding young Rangers as the new “extra Ranger” made Dino Thunder an iconic season.
4 Bridge (S.P.D. Green To S.P.D. Blue To S.P.D. Red)
The Space Patrol Delta Rangers changed their lineup quite a few times. Tommy may be the character with most Ranger forms, but Power Rangers S.P.D.’s Bridge Carson has an impressive record of his own. Bridge took three different colors in the same Power Rangers team, from Green to Blue to Red. Viewers were introduced to Bridge as the Green Ranger in Power Rangers S.P.D. season 1, with Sky serving as the Blue Ranger. After Jack exited the S.P.D., Sky became the Red Ranger, leaving the Blue Ranger spot for Bridge. Later in the Power Rangers timeline, Sky became the Space Patrol Delta’s Earth Commander, with Bridge becoming S.P.D.’s Red Ranger.
3 Sky (S.P.D Blue To S.P.D Red)
S.P.D.’s original Blue Ranger, Sky Tate, would become the Red Ranger following Jack Landors’ retirement. Sky was not an obvious choice for the Red Ranger, which made it an interesting one. While seeing Jack exit S.P.D. was bittersweet, Sky’s transition into the new Red Ranger was very well handled. As the Red Ranger, Sky proved himself a trustable leader, earning his Earth Commander position after Commander Crudger became S.P.D.’s Supreme Leader.
