Why Power Rangers’ Newest Team Made Me Fall In Love With The Show Again
Power Rangers’ most recent team gave the show its best seasons in years, Dino Fury and Cosmic Fury, both of which combined nostalgia with new ideas.
Is Cosmic Fury The Last Power Rangers Season?
Cosmic Fury's Finale Is Called "The End"
Whether Power Rangers season 31 will happen has yet to be revealed, but everything points to the next show after Cosmic Fury being a reboot. As of the writing of this article, no new Super Sentai adaptation has been announced. Power Rangers is leaving New Zealand for the first time since 2003's Ninja Storm, suggesting that the current format of TV shows may indeed be coming to an end. That does not mean Power Rangers is over after Cosmic Fury, only that the show might be reworked into something different.

Between the returns of Billy and Lord Zedd and the lack of updates regarding season 31, it seemed like Cosmic Fury had been designed to be the end of Power Rangers as we know it. The fact that a new Power Rangers universe from I Am Not Okay With This co-creator Jonathan Entwistle had been announced to be in the works in 2020 (via THR) contributed to this perception. Cosmic Fury is full of callbacks to the original show and even had its own “Avengers: Endgame’s portal scene” moment multiple Megazords from previous seasons arriving at the last minute.
Power Rangers' Reboot Show Is Reportedly Not Moving Forward At Netflix
The Power Rangers Reboot Has Been In The Works For A While
While Entwistle’s new Power Rangers universe was announced in 2020, years went by without any official updates on the project. Given that Power Rangers had collaborated with Netflix for Dino Fury season 2 and Cosmic Fury, both of which were released as streaming originals, it appeared like whatever the franchise was planning for its future had to do with Netflix. However, in June 2024, TV Line reported that the Power Rangers reboot show is no longer moving forward at Netflix.
The last time Power Rangers entered a hiatus was in 2010, during which the only show on the air was a re-edited version of Mighty Morphin. The franchise returned in 2011 with Power Rangers Samurai.
According to TV Line, Hasbro is now looking for a new creative partner for the project. It’s unclear if Jonathan Entwistle and Daisy Jones & The Six producer Jenny Klein, who were attached to the project, are still involved with the reboot. It’s also unclear what this new Power Rangers series would look like, although it is safe to say it would have been an all-original production rather than a Sentai localization. As of the writing of this article, what the next Power Rangers show will be remains to be revealed.
Cosmic Fury’s Ending Teases A Mighty Morphin Sequel, But Will It Happen?
Billy Now Knows That Zordon Is Alive
Cosmic Fury’s ending leaves the door open for new stories set in the original continuity, with Zordon’s return teasing a potential Mighty Morphin sequel. Cosmic Fury nonchalantly brought Zordon back 25 years after the original Power Rangers mentor died in Power Rangers in Space’s “Countdown to Destruction.” Zordon was able to communicate with Aiyon, Cosmic Fury’s Gold Ranger, and used the iconic “may the power protect you" line. Billy later learned that Aiyon spoke with Zordon.
If a complete reboot ends up happening, the Zordon return tease might not lead anywhere after all.
Power Rangers: Once & Always had already teased Zordon’s potential return, with Billy noting that there are still a lot of mysteries regarding the Z-Wave and the Morphin Grid. Cosmic Fury ends on a similar note to Once & Always, with Billy yet to fully comprehend how Zordon could still be alive. Still, it is unclear whether there are plans for David Yost or any other original actors to return in another project. Mighty Morphin remains the most popular of the Power Rangers shows, but if a complete reboot ends up happening, the Zordon return tease might not lead anywhere after all.
How Power Rangers Cosmic Fury Brings Zordon Back To Life
Zordon "Died" In 1998's Power Rangers In Space
The circumstances of Zordon’s death were always mysterious, as the Power Rangers’ mentor sacrificed himself to create the Z-Wave that would purge evil from the universe. Zordon never had an actual body in any of the Power Rangers TV shows, meaning his death could always have been easily retconned. Still, Power Rangers had avoided retconning Zordon’s death in the past two decades, but now Cosmic Fury has brought him back. Zordon appears in Cosmic Fury as part of the Morphin Grid from Aiyon’s perspective.
The Morphin Grid is what gives the Power Rangers their powers – it also connects every Power Rangers team from any timeline or universe. When Zordon’s tube was destroyed by In Space Red Ranger Andros, the Eltharian being became part of the Morphin Grid. Zordon was able to communicate with Aiyon inside the Morphin Grid. However, the Gold Ranger needed to see a physical form inside the Grid to comprehend what was happening, which is why Zordon appeared as Zayto. This was a clever trick to bring Zordon back without actually showing him.
What Zayto Becoming A Morphin Master In Cosmic Fury Means
Zayto Is Now One With The Morphin Grid
Zayto does not become Zordon in Cosmic Fury – this was only the way Aiyon found the compressed Zordon’s presence. However, Zayto does become a Morphin Master. Zayto becoming one of the Morphin Masters was first teased in Dino Fury season 2’s finale, during which the Red Ranger died and was brought back. The Morphin Masters, which are all-powerful beings that guard the Power Rangers multiverse, restored Zayto’s body and used Morphin Grid magic to bring him back. This is why Zayto was slowly dying in Cosmic Fury, growing weaker every time he used the magic that was keeping him alive.
Zayto dies in Cosmic Fury, as the time he had in the world of the living was limited. However, instead of simply ending the Dino Fury saga on a somber note, Cosmic Fury made Zayto a Morphin Master. This means Zayto is no longer a human – he exists in a different realm entirely. The original Morphin Masters have existed for thousands of years and can be considered immortal. Zayto’s ending is a bittersweet one, as he will continue to protect people, just not as a human living among his friends.
How Power Rangers’ Lord Zedd Was Defeated In Cosmic Fury
The Rangers Trapped Lord Zedd On A Very Special Planet
Lord Zedd, one of the original Power Rangers villains, was finally defeated in Cosmic Fury. Zedd, who was redeemed in Power Rangers in Space’s finale, was brought back as a villain in Dino Fury through magic. In Cosmic Fury, Lord Zedd briefly became one of the strongest beings in the entire universe – Master Zedd. However, Master Zedd was betrayed by Squillia Naire. She trapped Master Zedd inside a tube and planned to destroy it, which would release evil Z-Wave that would have erased all that is good from the universe.
Lord Zedd is not beyond redemption and could break the loop whenever he is ready to be a force for good.
The Rangers prevented Lord Zedd’s tube from being destroyed, but they would still have to handle Zedd’s return. Morphin Master Zayto used his magic to send Zedd to a planet where the villain would have to face his worst fears on a loop for as long as he was evil. Lord Zedd’s worst fear was to be married to Rita Repulsa again, resulting in a hilarious scene that felt like something straight from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. According to Zayto, Lord Zedd is not beyond redemption and could break the loop whenever he is ready to be a force for good.
Cosmic Fury’s New Power Rangers Team Explained
Power Rangers' Latest Team Includes An Orange Ranger
There is a new Power Rangers team at the end of Cosmic Fury. The show had several lineups throughout its ten episodes, with Mighty Morphin Blue Ranger Billy, Micky as Ninja Steel’s Red Ranger, and Dino Charge’s Dark Ranger Heckyl ing the main Rangers. That said, the Power Rangers now consisted of Red Ranger Amelia, Gold Ranger Aiyon, Green Ranger Izzy, Black Ranger Javi, Blue Ranger Ollie, and Orange Ranger Fern at the end of the show. Interestingly, what could be the final Power Rangers team in the current continuity didn't include either a pink or a yellow Ranger.

Will Any Of The Cosmic Fury Rangers Return In Power Rangers?
Power Rangers May Move Away From The Current Chronology Entirely
There haven’t been any new Power Rangers shows, specials, or movies since the end of Cosmic Fury. The Cosmic Fury Rangers haven’t appeared in the comics either, which mostly cover the Mighty Morphin era with some special appearances from other teams through time travel and the multiverse. While Power Rangers has been changing its entire cast ahead of a new season ever since the end of the Zordon Era, it was common for previous characters to return at least once in a crossover episode.
However, given that the next Power Rangers series may be a reboot rather than a traditional season 31, chances of Cosmic Fury characters returning in future projects are currently low. Although the prospect of a Power Rangers reboot with more mature storytelling and a different format is exciting, the fact that the usual crossovers and connectivity between seasons might be lost can be disappointing. Regardless, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury offered a great conclusion not only to its cast but to the saga that began in 1993.
