Kimberly’s exit from Amy Jo Johnson left Mighty Morphin Power Rangers midway through the third season, with David Yost’s Billy and Jason David Frank’s Tommy then becoming the only two OG Rangers still on the team. Both Billy and Tommy remained on the show after the Zeo transition, although the former was no longer a Power Ranger and eventually left as well.
While Zeo was adapting a different Super Sentai show – Ohranger rather than Zyuranger – it was still very much a sequel to Mighty Morphin. Most of the characters were the same from the final season of the original series, and the Rangers would still go to school and hang around the Youth Center. As such, some storylines and character moments from MMPR were carried onto Zeo. This includes Tommy and Kimberly’s relationship, which would have to be resolved eventually given that the original Pink Ranger was no longer on the team.
Kimberly Broke Up With Tommy Through A “Dear John” Letter In Power Rangers Zeo
Kimberly Told Tommy She Had Found Someone Else
Kimberly Hart left Zordon’s team in MMPR season 3 to participate in a gymnastic competition and pursue other things in life beyond being a Power Ranger. Kimberly wanted to focus on her career and find different purposes other than being a superhero, which was a very interesting and mature way of writing the character off the show. The original Pink Ranger transferred her powers to Kat and moved to Florida. Kat would remain as the Pink Ranger in Zeo, during which Kimberly never appeared but was acknowledged in the infamous “There’s No Business Like Snow Business” episode.

At the beginning of the two-part episode, Tommy receives a letter from Kimberly while he is working out. Adam started reading the letter so that Tommy would not have to stop his exercise, yet they soon realized that the content of the letter was too delicate. Tommy would continue reading the letter himself, in which Kimberly tells him she has found someone else and is breaking up with him. This was the end of Tommy and Kimberly’s relationship, which dated back to the events of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season 1.
Tommy And Kat’s Relationship In Zeo Would Become Endgame Decades Later
Tommy And Kat Got Married And Had A Son In Power Rangers
In the same episode where Kimberly broke up with Tommy through a letter, Power Rangers Zeo introduced the idea that Tommy and Kat could become a couple. While it was strange to set up a new romantic interest for Tommy as soon as Kimberly was definitely written out of the story, the pairing of Kat and Tommy worked. Kat was there for Tommy during that difficult moment, and they were important pillars of the Zeo team. Tommy and Kat eventually became a thing, with their relationship continuing throughout Zeo and Turbo.
In the Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon comic book, Kat and Tommy's son is an S.P.D. cadet who ends up becoming a Green Ranger like his father. J.J. Oliver was also referenced in Power Rangers: Once & Always.
Tommy, Kat, Adam, and Tanya quit the team and welcomed a new generation of Rangers midway through Power Rangers Turbo, after which it would take five years for Tommy to appear again. The original Green Ranger showed up in Wild Force for the “Forever Red” crossover using his Zeo Red powers, but not much was revealed about his personal life. Likewise, Tommy was alone in Dino Thunder and didn’t seem to have any family waiting for him. However, in 2017’s “Dimensions in Danger,” we learn that Tommy and Kat eventually got married and had a son.
Power Rangers Eventually Retconned Kimberly’s Infamous Letter To Tommy
A Power Rangers Comic Book Recontextualized Kimberly’s Letter
Power Rangers breaking up Tommy and Kimberly was controversial, especially because of how it happened. While Kimberly’s absence would have to be acknowledged one way or the other, having her break up with Tommy through a letter in which she says she has found someone else wasn’t the best of decisions. It was a somewhat tragic ending to a couple viewers had been following since the first season of the original Power Rangers show. Tommy “replacing” Kimberly so quickly also didn’t work very well, even though Tommy and Kat did make for a great couple and became endgame.

Power Rangers In Order: How To Watch Every Series Chronologically & By Release Date
From Mighty Morphin to Cosmic Fury, here is how to watch every Power Rangers TV show in order, both chronologically and by release date.
Fortunately, Power Rangers would retcon Kimberly’s letter in 2017’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink #6. The BOOM! Studios comic book about Kimberly’s life after she left Angel Grove revealed that, while the original Pink Ranger did write that letter, she was lying about having found someone else. Kimberly decided not to be a Ranger anymore, and she felt it would be unfair to keep Tommy in a relationship where they would rarely see each other. Kimberly was too heartbroken to break up with Tommy, so she came up with a lie that would make it easier.
