Summary

  • Power Rangers' morphing calls can be long and confusing, leading to hilarious moments in the show.
  • Super Samurai once joked about how long the Power Rangers' costume change can take.
  • The series lacks a definitive explanation for how morphs work, with contradictions and theories arising.

the villains don’t just attack the Power Rangers while they’re morphing.

Power Rangers has tried to answer some of the questions created by its tropes. One great example is Zordon’s non-escalation rule, which helps justify why the Ranger doesn’t bring the Megazord into the battle right from the start. Other mysteries, however, are more complicated to solve. Even after watching all 973 episodes of Power Rangers and the movies, I still do not have a definitive answer as to how morphs work. That said, the show once hilariously acknowledged that the heroes can take too much time to transform before ing the fight.

Power Rangers Samurai Poked Fun At How Long The Rangers Take To Morph

“The Longest Costume Change I’ve Ever Seen”

Power Rangers Super Samurai’s “Trickster Treat” included one of the longest morphing calls in the franchise's history, to the point that even the villain acknowledged how long it was taking for the Rangers to change costumes. The episode saw the Power Rangers facing a monster with telepathic powers, Trickster. Ahead of their ultimate confrontation with the villain of the week, all six Samurai Rangers morphed in front of the monster – and it took more than two minutes for them to suit up. The sequence has since become an infamous example of how long the Rangers can take to morph.

Long morphing sequences were nothing new for Power Rangers, but the one in “Trickster Treat” was just too much. The Samurai morphs were relatively long by default, as the Rangers had to perform a couple of moves with their morphers, grab their swords, and more before completing them. However, instead of showing all Rangers transforming at the same time, this episode had the heroes change costumes one by one. With each of the six Rangers taking about 20 seconds to morph, their complete transformation took more than two minutes. The villain described it as the “longest costume change in history.”

Do The Power Rangers Morph In Real Time During Battles?

Not Even Power Rangers Is Sure About How Morphing Calls Work

Rocky, Billy, and Kat morphin in Power Rangers Once Always

Whether the Power Rangers morphs happen in real-time is one of the franchise’s oldest and most complicated questions. There is no definitive answer as to what the morphing calls look like in the real world from an in-universe perspective, namely because Power Rangers has contradicted itself several times in that regard. For example, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, which is canon, has a scene where Pink Ranger Kat is morphing into her Zeo form in real time. However, it seemed like it was happening much faster than the usual Zeo morphing sequence.

A popular theory is that the full transformation of a Power Ranger happens in a pocket dimension or the Morphin Grid itself (...)

More recently, during the Once & Always special, Billy, Kat, and Rocky morphed in real-time while saying the name of their Zords. However, everything happened within a few seconds. A popular theory is that the full transformation of a Power Ranger happens in a pocket dimension or the Morphin Grid itself, which explains some things but creates other problems. If the full transformation is only a visual representation of what is happening between the Rangers and the Morphin Grid, scenes like the one in “Trickster Treat” should not happen.

Power Rangers’ Confusing Morphing Rules Created Some Bizarre Moments

Can The Rangers Simply Put Their Costumes On Without Morphing?

The Zeo Power Rangers and Tommy Oliver in Dino Thunder

Morphing calls have been one of the most mysterious aspects of the Power Rangers universe for 30 years now, which often leads to some hilarious moments. For example, in Power Rangers Zeo episode 1, Tommy’s team morphed even though they were already in costume and only had to put their helmets back on. In Dino Thunder, when Jason David Frank could not film for a while, the show wrote a storyline in which Tommy could no longer unmorph and had to remain in his Black Ranger form. This raised the question of why he couldn’t just remove his helmet.

The Power Rangers usually unmorph by saying "power down."

Power Rangers knows how to have fun with its tropes and inconsistencies, especially in modern stories. In one of the most recent BOOM! Studios’ Power Rangers arcs, the villains attacked two Rangers when they were morphing and made fun of how the heroes kept their guard down while transforming. A similar thing happened in Cosmic Fury when the evil Blue Ranger attacked the Green and Zenith Rangers while they were initiating their morphing call. It can be fun to try to find in-universe explanations for such tropes and inconsistencies, even if they don’t apply to all shows.
