Here's what we know so far about the announced Power Rangers shared universe. To a mainstream western audience, the Power Rangers brand elicits a sense of 1990s nostalgia, with big hair and even bigger attitudes. A group of martial arts-savvy teens are transformed into an elite evil-fighting force, complete with color-coordinated costumes, flashy weapons and, of course, giant robotic Zords. But while most fans will only be familiar with Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, the franchise has evolved constantly over the years, introducing new heroes, new themes, and epic crossovers.
Stranger Things' Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger. Reviews were mixed, but box office performance was poor, and while Lionsgate clearly had designs to build Power Rangers into a major Hollywood franchise, the first film's poor financial return put paid to future sequels. Now Hasbro is set to morph Power Rangers into a fully-fledged shared universe.
More Power Rangers Movies Are Coming
Reports emerged in the halcyon days of late 2019 that Paramount was eyeing a new Power Rangers reboot will surely begin with the familiar origin of Zordon and his five teenage warriors.
Power Rangers Movies & TV Shows Will Share A Universe
Unlike Lionsgate's 2017 effort, Entwistle will be placed in charge of an overarching Power Rangers universe that will play out on both the big screen and TV. According to the original story from Hasbro will no doubt be painfully aware of how those pretenders failed.
Power Rangers Is Going Back To Its Roots
According to the initial 2019 reports, Entwistle envisioned a time travel story that would shift the central teenage quintet from the modern day back to the 1990s, recapturing the essence of the classic series while adding a contemporary edge. Although story details remain scarce at present, Entwistle's latest comments suggest he still hopes to marry together the old and new. The new man behind Power Rangers stated his aim to "bring the spirit of anato the future, harnessing the action and storytelling that made this brand a success." This commitment to a retro approach is a world apart from the 2017 movie, which was unashamedly modern in its setting and tone.
What Does This Mean For A Power Rangers 2017 Sequel?
Unfortunately for fans of the live-action 2017 Power Rangers movie, the announcement of a shared universe is the final nail in the coffin for a sequel. Power Rangers paved the way for a follow-up by teasing the arrival of Tommy Oliver, otherwise known as the Power Rangers 2, but with the property switching studios, the 2017 cast are almost certainly done at Angel Grove High, especially if the new story travels back to the 1990s.
