Power Rangers reboot at Netflix has been canceled. A lot has changed since the 2017 movie, and Power Rangers has focused its efforts on television since then.

Power Rangers doesn’t have the best track record regarding movies. While the franchise has been very successful on television for 30 years and has almost 1000 episodes across all seasons, there have only been three theatrical Power Rangers movies, of which only one is canon to the TV show. Power Rangers (2017) was supposed to reinvent the saga and make Mighty Morphin into a movie franchise, but it bombed at the box office despite doing many things right. Unfortunately, Power Rangers (2017) was missing something that every Power Rangers story should have – lots of action.

The Next Power Rangers Movie Needs A Lot Of Action After The 2017 Reboot

Power Rangers (2017) Only Had A Couple Of Action Sequences

Power Rangers (2017) had a budget of around $100 million, which isn’t too low compared to other blockbusters but still doesn’t seem to have been enough for what a Power Rangers movie should include. Between the Rangers only properly morphing once and the Red Ranger being the only one to get a Power Weapon, the 2017 reboot clearly struggled with budget limitations. While the film was very well written and gave each character an interesting arc, it lacked the sense of adventure that defines Power Rangers due to how little action it included.

The Power Rangers reboot was an origin story, meaning that a significant portion of the movie took place before Jason, Trini, Zack, Billy, and Kimberly even had their powers. At a time when there are so many superhero movies full of action and larger-than-life characters, releasing a Power Rangers film where the heroes only suit up in the third arc for one brief battle was not a good idea. Seeing the Power Rangers on the big screen with a movie-level budget was one of the biggest selling points of the 2017 reboot, yet the film didn't deliver in that regard.

Power Rangers’ Next Film Can’t Be An Origin Story And Must Jump Right Into The Action

Power Rangers Should Make The Most Of Its Colorful Heroes And Giant Robots

The next Power Rangers movie, whenever it happens, shouldn’t be an origin story – especially if it’s based on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Over 30 years after “Day of the Dumpster,” the original Power Rangers show remains the most recognizable part of the franchise. Even those who never watched multiple Power Rangers seasons will know who Jason or Kimberly are, meaning there should be no reason for another origin story should the franchise ever reboot Mighty Morphin again. Skipping the Power Rangers’ origins would also allow a new film to jump right into the action.

Power Rangers (2017)'s post-credits scene teased the introduction of the Green Ranger in a sequel.

This applies to a potential TV show reboot as well. At this point, going back to the five teenagers with attitude being rescued by Zordon and later fighting Rita Repulsa’s monsters would be as redundant as telling how Spider-Man got his powers or showing what happened to Batman’s parents. Power Rangers has plenty of cool characters and storylines that could be used in fresh new ways even in a Mighty Morphin reboot, as proven by the comics. Character development is essential in any story, but so is action when it comes to a Super Sentai-inspired franchise.

The Power Rangers franchise has changed a lot since the 2017 reboot flopped, with the brand being acquired by Hasbro in 2018. Power Rangers has continued to release TV shows since then, although 2024 will be the first year without a new series since 2010. With no Super Sentai adaptation announced so far and all the uncertainty surrounding the rumored TV show reboot, it’s difficult to predict what Power Rangers’ next big live-action release will be. In the meantime, Power Rangers continues to tell stories on other media, including with the BOOM! Studios comics and video games.

Rewatching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie in 2024 is very nostalgic and reveals some harsh realities about the original Power Rangers film.

Therefore, there might not be another Power Rangers film anytime soon. Power Rangers is big enough of a brand and has enough popular characters to work as a movie franchise, especially Mighty Morphin. That said, given that it has been a television franchise aimed at children first and foremost for three decades, turning it into a modern superhero IP like Marvel and DC isn’t easy. Interestingly, it took 20 years after Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie for the franchise to release a third theatrical movie. Hopefully, it won’t take that long for Power Rangers to get another film.
