The team's colors are the butt of another joke in Power Rangers Prime #5 by Melissa Flores and Michael YG. After the Rangers all received their powers for the first time last issue, they have their first battle against the VR Troopers collectively as a team. Before the battle, the Power Rangers are undermined when one of the Troopers points out the Rangers' "different colors" and questions: "are they warriors or crayons?"

The moment calls into question the significance behind colors in the Power Rangers franchise; over time, the answer varies.

The meaning behind the colors of the Power Rangers varies from season to season, and even comic book to comic book. Oftentimes, the Power Rangers comics have found ways to add meaning to the colors when there was little to no meaning on the actual television show. Dating back to the original Mighty Morphin series, there was hardly ever an in-universe explanation as to the meaning of the colors. Each color has traditionally represented an aspect of someone's role in the team, with Red typically being the leader (with some exceptions), but there was little to no lore reasoning.

The closest that readers get to actual lore reasoning comes in the various Power Rangers comics. For example, the Mighty Morphin comics establish that all Blue Rangers are inherent problem solvers for the Power Rangers. Meanwhile, the deepest explanation of the colors within lore comes with the introduction of the Emissaries Three. The Emissaries Three are three god-tier protectors of the Morphin Grid and their Morphin Masters. When the Blue Emissary recruit Jason, Trini, and Zack alongside Kiya Kyatyl to become the Omega Rangers, their powers are linked directly to the Morphin Grid.

As such, the Omega trio each has a color meant to represent each color of the Emissaries Three: red, blue, and yellow. Other issues reveal that, outside of the central three, there were once Green, Black, and Pink Emissaries, explaining how Zack's black color scheme fits into the lore. All six colors are the colors that encom the average Power Rangers team. Beyond lore, most colors represent a specific characteristic or role (i.e. black or blue is usually second-in-command, red is a courageous beacon of hope, etc.), or have an elemental attribute (i.e. red with fire, blue with water).

Fans may certainly find it fascinating to see how the Prime powers from Rita Repulsa, the VR Troopers take the threat seriously, initially.

In the Prime Universe, VR Troopers are reimagined as a military task force working for an Eltarian dictatorship, hence why they are the antagonists to the Power Rangers. The Eltarians came into power by betraying the Power Rangers and destroying them, as well as anyone who adopted their powers. Being a Power Ranger has been outlawed by the Eltarian government ever since they seized the Earth for themselves.

Despite outnumbering a sole Red Ranger, the VR Troopers are warned by their Captain Kanel to stand back so that they can reassess the situation when Lauren first debuts her Ranger outfit. Kanel and the others immediately recognize and acknowledge the danger that a Power Ranger holds, even if they don't immediately understand it at first. Once additional Rangers start to manifest, matching Lauren's costume in different shades, it becomes easier for the VR Troopers to poke fun at the situation.

While the Power Rangers' color scheme is an ittedly silly aspect to the franchise, the success rate of the Power Rangers overcomes how silly they may look. Such has been the case for years, and will likely be the case once this new Prime team further establish themselves. Before this battle, Power Rangers had been outlawed for so long in this universe that this is the first time that the VR Troopers have ever seen Rangers up close. Their color coordination is easy to scoff at now, but as long as the Rangers prove formidable opponents, they'll become no laughing matter.

Their winning record has given the Power Rangers the in-universe positive reputation that they have today.
