Super Sentai adaptation.

Rather than recreating the costumes from Uchu Sentai Kyuranger, Cosmic Fury gave its Rangers original suits that were created for the American TV show. As a result, Power Rangers season 30 couldn’t use Japanese footage for scenes that involved the Rangers fighting in costume. In other words, apart from the Megazord battles when the Rangers were not being shown, everything we saw in Cosmic Fury was original footage rather than repurposed scenes from Kyuranger. The problem, however, is that the Cosmic Fury suits left a lot to be desired.

The New Power Rangers Show Needs Better Costumes Than Cosmic Fury

Cosmic Fury’s Original Suits Were Underwhelming

Going into Cosmic Fury, I was excited that Power Rangers was going to have a team wearing entirely original costumes for the first time in the history of the franchise. Unfortunately, the Cosmic Fury suits neither looked as good as the ones we were used to from previous seasons nor captured the essence of what a Super Sentai-inspired team should look like. I liked the idea behind the Cosmic Fury costumes – something closer to American superhero costumes that you would see on shows like The Flash or even the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Still, the execution wasn’t quite there.

Lightspeed Rescue's Titanium Ranger was the first American-exclusive Power Ranger, meaning he had no Sentai counterpart.

The shields were a nice little idea, but they didn’t blend well with the rest of the costumes. The materials also didn’t look great in action, and while I enjoyed the fights in Cosmic Fury, the costumes played against them. Now that Power Rangers's Disney+ show seems to be an all-original show rather than a Sentai adaptation, I’m cautiously optimistic about what the costumes will look like. It may seem like something small, but the suits can make or break a Power Rangers series.

Power Rangers Without Super Sentai Is Risky (But It Can Work)

According to Deadline, Toei is not involved in the new Power Rangers show. This means that the costumes might be very different from what we are used to, which is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, I would love to have a new take on what a Power Ranger looks like, especially if it's something with higher production value and that always looks great on camera.

A new Power Rangers series is reportedly in development at Disney+, giving the franchise a perfect opportunity to reinvent itself after 30 years.

It also depends on whether this new Power Rangers series at Disney+ will be a Mighty Morphin reboot or not. If it is MMPR, the suits will have to somewhat resemble the Zyuranger ones, even if they go for something very different, like the 2017 film. If it is not an MMPR reboot, Power Rangers could create something completely unique for the first time. Either way, I hope the new show still captures the spirit of not only Power Rangers but also the Super Sentai franchise that inspired it.
