Summary

  • Original Red Ranger Jason Lee Scott's final legacy in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a surprising one, as he ultimately chooses civilian life over being a Ranger.
  • Jason previously retired from his Ranger duties in Boom! Studios Power Rangers comic canon, and his subsequent appearances, including in the series finale Darkest Hour #1, showcases that true heroism doesn't require a Morpher or a suit.
  • In Darkest Hour #1, Jason proves that being a Power Ranger is about making a difference, regardless of leadership status, suit color, or whether someone is operating on the front lines, or behind the scenes.

Warning: Spoilers for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1!Jason Lee Scott's final legacy with the Power Rangers is an unexpected one. As the first Red Ranger of the franchise, Jason is more closely linked to the franchise than most of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers cast. As such, when it came time for the BOOM! Studios comic continuation to end, audiences were especially curious to see how Jason would end up in the final issue.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1 – written by Melissa Flores, with art by Simona Di Gianfelice – reveals that Jason doesn't even wear a Ranger suit again. Even for a last hurrah, readers don't get one last shot of Jason in his Red Ranger suit as one would expect, but that's exactly what the character wants for himself.

Former Red Ranger Jason tells Yellow Ranger Taylor Earnhardt  that he's accepted life without Rangerhood.

Despite going down in the history books as perhaps the greatest Red Ranger in franchise history, Jason would rather stick with civilian life than Ranger life. Considering his journey both on- and onscreen, this is the perfect realization for a character like him to make.

The end is here for the BOOM! Studios era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but it's not a moment for tears - after 8 years, it's a moment to rejoice.

The Original Red Ranger Has Given Up On Rangerhood (For a Good Reason)

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1 by Melissa Flores, Simona Di Gianfelice, Raúl Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire

Red Ranger Jason calls Taylor Earnhardt of the Power Rangers Wild Force Yellow a greater captain than he is.

In Darkest Hour #1, Taylor praises Jason as a Power Ranger. He's quick to correct her, saying he's made peace with the fact that he'll stay on Earth as a civilian.

Jason's run as a Red Ranger officially came to an end in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #100, where after defeating the Death Ranger, Red Ranger uniform was given to Trini, Jason enjoyed living a normal life and, as a result, his role in the comic was significantly reduced. However, he inevitably returned to the forefront when all hands needed to be on deck for Dark Specter's takeover of the Earth.

He soon collaborated with Dark Specter's zombie army. Taylor and Jason grew a fond respect for each other, and in Darkest Hour #1, Taylor praises Jason as a Power Ranger. He's quick to correct her, saying he's made peace with the fact that he'll stay on Earth as a civilian while the real Rangers leap onto the battlefield, and knows how he can be useful as a civilian.

Jason's final image in Boom! Studios Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers is as a civilian, where he not only still finds a way to make a difference, but proves he doesn't need to have a Morpher to be a hero.

The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Comic Finale Proves Jason Is Still A Hero

With Or Without A Morpher

It's oddly poetic for this sentiment to come from the mouth of someone who many fans view as the best Red Power Ranger ever. Jason's final image in Boom! Studios Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers is as a civilian, where he not only still finds a way to make a difference, but proves he doesn't need to have a Morpher to be a hero. He shows that being a Power Ranger isn't about leader status or the color of one's suit, but making the most out of what one has.
