Super Sentai adaptation. Shifting from the already iconic MMPR costumes to new ones was risky, but it set a precedent that would define Power Rangers for decades to come.
After Zeo, every Power Rangers season would be based on a different Super Sentai show. This means that the costumes and the Zords would change after each season or so. As a result, most Power Rangers series after MMPR would end with the heroes losing their powers or retiring, leaving room for a new team to rise. However, the transition from Zeo to Turbo wasn’t very well thought out.
Power Rangers’ Zeo Team Only Lasted One Season Before Shifting Into Turbo
The Zeo Powers Mysteriously Disappeared During The Turbo Movie
The disappearance of the Zeo powers remains one of the strangest chapters in the Power Rangers chronology, at least from an in-universe perspective. With the show moving from a Chouriki Sentai Ohranger adaptation to Gekisou Sentai Carranger, it only made sense for Power Rangers to introduce new Zords and a new set of powers that would replace the Zeo ones. The problem, however, is that neither the Turbo movie nor the Turbo show ever explained why the Rangers had to abandon the Zeo powers. Additionally, Power Rangers never explained what happened to the Zeo crystals.

The team led by Tommy still had their Zeo powers by the end of Power Rangers season 4. However, a few minutes into Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, Zordon presents the Rangers with new powers and Zords. The Zeo powers only appear once during the Turbo film, when Kat briefly morphs into Zeo Pink before as she falls from a cliff. The fact that the Zeo crystals had been described as being far more powerful than the Mighty Morphin powers made their sudden disappearance ahead of Power Rangers Turbo even stranger.
Tommy’s Zeo Ranger V Form Made A Surprising Return In Forever Red
The Zeo Rangers Also Appeared A Few Other Times In Power Rangers
Kat’s failed morph in Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie remained as the final appearance of a Zeo Ranger for five years. This changed when Jason David Frank’s Tommy Oliver, who had been away from the show since the latter half of Turbo, returned for Wild Force’s “Forever Red” crossover. Tommy was one of 10 veteran Red Rangers who went to the moon to fight the Machine Empire in a nostalgic episode that honored the first decade of Power Rangers shows. While Tommy had accumulated four Ranger forms by that point, he morphed into Zeo Ranger V Red.

This 22-Year-Old Power Rangers Episode Fulfilled The Dreams Of Every ‘90s Kid
One of the greatest Power Rangers episodes of all time delivered an interaction that every 1990s kid who watched the show had dreamed of seeing.
With T.J. as Turbo Red, it made sense for Tommy to show up as Zeo Red, but the episode doesn’t explain how or why he was using that power. Tommy would morph into Zeo Red again in “Dimensions in Danger,” this time by using a Master Morpher. Four Zeo Rangers appeared in “The Legendary Battle,” although the 20th-anniversary special wasn’t too worried about continuity and even featured Sentai teams that were never in Power Rangers to begin with. More recently, Zeo Yellow Tanya was one of the Rangers captured by Rita Repulsa in Power Rangers: Once & Always.
