Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on July 28, and those three hours helped the fans really get to know the new characters. It can be difficult to get a spinoff going without major connections to the original, so this move helped ensure fans gave the show a real chance.
Going by the reactions on social media, this worked perfectly. The new liars are complex and interesting, each with their own reasons for wanting to get back at mean-girl Karen. For a glimpse into the different motivations and instincts of each character, it can be helpful to look at where they would be sorted if they lived in the world of Harry Potter. A Hogwarts House might not say everything about a character, but it certainly shows where their priorities lie.
Wes — Ravenclaw
Where Pretty Little Liars had Ezra Fitz, Original Sin has Wes. Wes is Tabby's boss and a film school graduate, and he uses both of those positions to try to develop a relationship with her. However, Wes's genuine appreciation of Tabby's skills marks him as a Ravenclaw, not Slytherin.
Unlike other characters who lead with their authority, Wes seems intent on proving his intelligence to Tabby. He speaks with her on her level and arranges a fancy dinner and movie night to showcase their similarities. Wes may be a creep, but at least he looks at Tabby as an intellectual equal.
Sheriff Beasley — Slytherin
It's an unfortunate stereotype that villains are always Slytherins, but it is true in the case of Sheriff Beasley. He understands how power works, and he uses it. This can be seen in the way he uses his position to control Noa, how he treats Karen when she doesn't get the lead, and his domineering personality in the aftermath of her death.
He truly seems to care about his daughter's death, but whether that's because of his affection for her or the damage it does to his image is hard to say. Sheriff Beasley is vengeful and takes advantage of the system to get what he wants, which is clear evidence of a shrewd Slytherin.
Sidney Haworthe — Hufflepuff
While the parents' story is clearly going to be critical to the future of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, the only one audiences really know so far is Sidney. From the flashbacks, it's clear that Sidney cared about Angela, and continues to feel massive amounts of guilt about what happened to her. However, her loyalty to Davie was stronger.
As she tells the girls, she would have done anything for Davie when they were younger. This is classic Hufflepuff behavior and makes it no wonder that she readily took in Imogen after Davie's death. Though she's obviously keeping secrets, she does tell Imogen and Tabby part of the truth about Angela, proving that the people she loves are always her primary concern.
Karen Beasley / Kelly Beasley — Slytherin
Karen and Kelly have to be classified together because fans are currently unsure which twin made it out of the Spirit Week Dance alive. Helpfully, they both showed off enough Slytherin traits for the sorting to fit both. Karen rejects Imogen out of personal betrayal but also knows when to make her grievance public and when to keep it in. She knows the system and works it to her advantage.
Though Kelly seems nicer on the surface, she seems to be the schemer of the two, coming up with the plan to get back at Imogen for posting the video. Whichever twin survived currently seems to be playing the long game, making nice in order to attack more effectively in the future—a classic Slytherin villain move.
A — Gryffindor
A's identity is obviously still a mystery, but that doesn't mean fans haven't been able to pick up a few clues about their personality along the way. Original Sin's version of A is incredibly bold, operating out of the school and appearing to the Liars on multiple occasions.
They are clearly meticulous in their planning, but there's recklessness there too. Killing the janitor and attempting to grab Imogen's leg at the assembly suggests impulsive decision-making that wasn't there with the original A. It's not hard to spin the character as someone trying to make a horrible injustice right, meaning that A is likely the hero in their version of the story, a classic role for a Gryffindor to play.
Noa Olivar — Hufflepuff
Noa is a hard character to classify, in part because audiences know so little about her. Despite that, what fans do know is that she has a protective instinct that drives her most significant actions. She took the blame for her mother's drug use, seemingly content with the punishment she suffered as long as it kept her mother safe.
The only time she pushes back is when someone else she cares about is being hurt. Noa pushes to go to the dance because she wants to be able to Shawn, and only tells him the truth about the drugs when she fears losing him. Only time will tell if her Hufflepuff side continues to dominate, or if another house seems more accurate in the future.
Faran Bryant — Slytherin
Faran is ambitious and confrontational, fighting to get what she wants most. She also is willing to say what others won't, valuing honesty over politeness. All of these traits mark her as a Slytherin. Similar to the original Pretty Little Liars's Spencer Hastings, Faran has a family that consistently pushes her, which has led to her developing such a strong drive.
While Faran achieves most things through hard work, she is willing to break the rules to get what she wants. She keeps her scoliosis secret to make sure it doesn't disrupt her ballet career and is willing to betray Imogen and Tabby for the sake of her future. She may be a far cry from Harry Potter's more villainous Slytherins, but she also should not be underestimated.
Minnie 'Mouse' Honrada — Hufflepuff
Mouse is a classic Hufflepuff, and fans are bound to love her for that. Although the first three episodes didn't provide much information about her past, what they did show was her basic instinct to care for the people around her. She may start out as a loner, but she becomes fiercely devoted to the group.
While Noa and Faran are willing to throw Imogen and Tabby under the bus to keep themselves out of trouble, Mouse pushes back, reminding them that they all agreed to be part of the payback against Karen. She agrees to the video only because she believed Karen killed a mouse in a torturous way, showing that she has a gentle nature that only turns when she feels someone has gone far beyond the bounds of what is acceptable.
Tabitha 'Tabby' Haworthe — Ravenclaw
Tabby appears to live her life guided by the quest for knowledge and her expression of creativity. Although it hasn't been clearly explained what she wants from the boy's locker room, her Ravenclaw instincts can be seen clearly through her use of cameras to uncover new information both there and at the warehouse.
In addition to her manner of gaining information, she also sees the world through her chosen subject area. She is incredibly knowledgable when it comes to movies (horror in particular), and uses them to express her experience of the world. Similar to 's movie buffs Randy and Mindy, Tabby's knowledge is likely to come in handy, helping her survive by knowing the rules and putting the pieces of the puzzle together before anyone else.
Imogen Adams — Gryffindor
Imogen Adams is a powerful main character, consistently looking to solve her problems through action. When she came into conflict with Karen, she immediately confronted her, declaring that she would run for spirit queen on a whim. She's reckless at times, but this is further proof of her Gryffindor status.
While she displays some Ravenclaw traits in her impulse to research her mother's background, they are secondary to her drive to action, as seen when she went to visit the warehouse alone. She proves herself to be a strong leader, and while she absolutely has negative Gryffindor traits like stubbornness and rule-breaking, it's clear that she has a good heart driving most of her decisions.
