Princess Diaries fans express their desire to see original cast in Princess Diaries 3. The first film, released by Disney in 2001 and based on the best-selling books by Meg Cabot, starred Anne Hathaway in her breakout role as an awkward teen who discovers through her estranged grandmother, played by Julie Andrews, that she is actually a princess. Princess Diaries 2, a sequel starring Hathaway, Andrews, and Chris Pine, came out in 2004. Now, nearly two decades later, Disney is reportedly in development on a third Princess Diaries installment.
With the news broken, Princess Diaries fans are demanding the return of the original cast in the sequel. Twitter s are already taking to the social media platform to express their excitement at the announcement, along with their reservations about a Princess Diaries 3 without Hathaway and Andrews reprising their roles as Mia Thermopolis and Clarisse Renaldi. Princess Diaries 3 Needs Its Original Cast To Succeed
It's difficult to imagine Princess Diaries 3 as a reboot with completely new characters. However, audiences have reason to be skeptical after the announcement. Original director Garry Marshall ed away in 2016. Following the Princess Diaries in 2001, Hathaway grew into a hugely successful film career, starring in hits including The Devil Wears Prada and Interstellar and winning an Academy Award for Best ing Actress for Les Misérables. Though The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins icon Andrews has recently appeared as the voice narration in Netflix's Bridgerton, the actor is now in her late 80s, and has previously expressed her doubts about a possible Princess Diaries 3. Neither have been confirmed to appear in the threequel so far.
Two decades is an awkward time gap that seems late for a sequel, yet too soon for a formal reboot. Princess Diaries has become something of a time capsule of the early 2000s, with its colorful fashion and girl power pop, and nostalgia will no doubt play crucial role in the threequel's appeal. Disney would be wise to take the same approach as Hocus Pocus 2, another sequel that found itself in a similar situation, coming out nearly thirty years after the original 1993 film. Its success could easily be attributed to reuniting Bette Midler, Kathy Majimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as the classic witch trio and surrounding them by fresh faces against a modern-day backdrop. The only way to carry the fans of the original Princess Diaries franchise into a new sequel is with the familiar presences of Hathaway and Andrews leading the way.
Little is yet known about what direction Princess Diaries 3 will take. Though it may prove challenging to reunite the entire cast so long after the first two films, it would be essential to the film's success to bring back at least its two leading women. If fans continue speaking out on online platforms, their dreams of Hathaway and Andrews reprising their roles in Princess Diaries 3 may come true.
