Anne Hathaway's best roles, The Princess Diaries chronicles Mia Thermopolis’ journey as she becomes the queen of Genovia. When The Princess Diaries was released, it received great reviews and became a cultural phenomenon. Even to this day, the movie is still considered one of the best teen dramas of the early 2000s.

From the press to her schoolmates, there was no shortage of people who wanted to either use Mia or destroy her in Princess Diaries. Despite several people having ill intentions towards her, Mia had a great system which included her grandma, mum, and her driver/security guard, Joe. Now that The Princess Diaries 3 has been confirmed, it will be interesting to see if the film will address one of the harsh realities of the original Princess Diaries movie.

The Princess Diaries 3 Needs To Finally Address Lilly Being A Bad Friend In The Original Movie

Lilly Didn't Always Mia

While Lana and her friends were the obvious villains in the original Princess Diaries film, there were times Lilly could be just as mean to Mia. For instance, when Mia confided in her about how she was feeling about her dad's death, Lilly's response was, “Hey, I thought you got over that. It's been two months.” When Mia got a makeover, Lilly was jealous and made harsh comments about how the princess looked instead of being her biggest er. Granted, Lilly might have thought she was just being helpful, but she was hurting Mia’s feelings without really caring.

Why Michael Moscovitz Wasn't In The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

Michael Moscovitz was one of the most beloved characters in The Princess Diaries. Unfortunately, he didn't return in The Princess Diaries 2.

Lilly barely took the time to understand Mia's feelings or her when she needed a confidence boost. Even after Lilly was mean to her supposed friend, they eventually made up after she discovered Mia was a princess. Unfortunately, the best friends didn't talk about Lilly's toxic behavior in previous The Princess Diaries movies. Because of this, The Princess Diaries 3 should delve into this ugly part of Mia and Lilly's friendship instead of just ignoring it again. If the movie fails to address the harsh truth about this particular relationship in the threequel, it might undermine Lilly's character growth.

How Heather Matarazzo's Lilly Can Return For The Princess Diaries 3

Heather Matarazzo Is Willing To Reprise Her Role In The Princess Diaries 3

Lilly and Mia in class in The Princess Diaries

Heather Matarazzo’s Lilly could be one of the characters who return for The Princess Diaries 3. As Mia's best friend, Lilly played a significant role in previous The Princess Diaries movies, so her return to the franchise wouldn't be too far-fetched. Lilly is ionate about social causes, so she could return to Genovia and be an activist. Given Lilly's strong personality, she could do a great job working for Mia’s government and help her best friend rule the small fictional Western European country.

While Lilly could be overbearing at times, there's no denying that her friendship with Mia was one of the best things about the franchise that should continue in The Princess Diaries 3.

When Heather Matarazzo was asked if she would reprise her role as Lilly in The Princess Diaries 3, she said she would return to the franchise if Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway do so too (via Cosmopolitan). While Lilly could be overbearing at times, there's no denying that her friendship with Mia was one of the best things about the franchise, so hopefully she's involved. However, to make it better, The Princess Diaries 3 needs to address her toxic tendencies towards Mia.
