Princess Diaries 3 is a long-awaited follow-up to the movie franchise starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews which adapted the Meg Cabot young adult novel series of the same name into a pair of features in 2001 and 2004. The sequel was announced in 2022 with Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji attached, though it is not clear if that is still the case. It has also not been officially announced if Hathaway will be reprising her original role, though original producer Debra Martin Chase is on board for the project.

Per Deadline, The Princess Diaries 3 has found its director in Joy Ride's Adele Lim. Lim has previously collaborated with Disney, the company producing the new sequel, when she wrote the screenplay for their 2021 animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon. Lim's partner Naia Cucukov is also on board as an executive producer alongside Melissa Stack (The Other Woman, Godmothered). Read Lim's statement about being attached to the project below:

As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.

What The Princess Diaries 3 Means For Adele Lim

The Movie Could Be Her First Directorial Smash

While Adele Lim has achieved both critical and commercial success as screenwriter, her path through Hollywood has been a complicated one. Although she co-wrote the 2018 smash hit Crazy Rich Asians, adapting the Kevin Kwan novel of the same name, she departed the sequel after it was revealed that she was offered significantly less than her male co-writer Peter Chiarelli. Raya and the Last Dragon was also a box office disappointment, earning $130.4 million against its roughly $100 million budget amid a pandemic-depressed box office and a simultaneous Disney+ streaming release.

The Crazy Rich Asians sequel, adapting the follow-up novel China Rich Girlfriend, has failed to materialize in the six years since the original movie's success.

Lim's directorial debut Joy Ride was also a theatrical disappointment, grossing $15.8 million against its $32 million budget despite earning a Certified Fresh score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Taking on the sequel to the iconic Anne Hathaway movie could allow her to get her directorial career on firmer footing, as it follows a pair of movies that were undeniable hits. The first Princess Diaries grossed $165.3 million against its $26 million budget while its $45 million sequel grossed $134.7 million, laying a strong foundation for the new movie.

Our Take On Adele Lim's The Princess Diaries 3

The Director Is A Great Match For The Material

In addition to The Princess Diaries 3 offering Lim a strong commercial prospect, she could help it garner critical respect, as her background proves that she is a solid match for the material. In addition to her experience with literary adaptations in Crazy Rich Asians, Lim cut her teeth on teen-oriented fare as a writer on a variety of shows including One Tree Hill, Life Unexpected, Star-Crossed, and The CW's Dynasty. She could easily bring her wealth of experience to the fore as the director of the new movie, helping it connect with both new audiences and longtime fans.
