the "Fox River Eight." Season 2 dealt with the resulting manhunt, set against a wider conspiracy. This storyline introduced a more dangerous kind of villain to Prison Break.
Most of season 1's villains were sadistic guards and powerful inmates. However, when the main characters escape into the world again, they are pitted against a new set of villains, who have the law (and even the president) on their side. One of these is FBI agent Alex Mahone, whose intelligence and problem-solving ability match Michael's. Mahone is formidable, but is tripped up by his reliance on drugs and his growing conscience. One of the harsh realities of rewatching Prison Break is the way that great characters become sidelined, and Mahone is a prime example.
Prison Break's New Show Should Bring Alex Mahone Back After Season 5 Ignored Him
Prison Break Writer "Didn't Know What To Do With" Mahone
Mahone quickly decoded the hidden messages in Michael's tattoo, closing the head start that the Fox River Eight had on the FBI. That said, as he began to sympathize with Michael, it appeared that Prison Break did not know how to further develop the character, and Mahone, played by William "Bill" Fichtner, was absent from season 5. While season 5 ignored the character, Mahone still had potential in the Prison Break world. With his dark past and formidable intellect, the Prison Break reboot should bring back Mahone, as one of the most nuanced and well-developed characters in the series.
Knepper did not rule out the possibility that Mahone could return to Prison Break at another point.
Most of the original Prison Break characters appeared in the season 5 reboot, but Mahone's absence was felt. Robert Knepper, who plays the villainous T-Bag, told Digital Spy that the writer, Paul Scheuring, had decided to write Mahone out of the series. Knepper said, "He's a brilliant actor – but Paul honestly said to me, 'I don't know what to do with that character.'" Still, Knepper did not rule out the possibility that Mahone could return to Prison Break at another point, saying "if someday there's another chapter of this, maybe then Bill will be back."
Alex Mahone Could Be The Connection Between Prison Break's OG Characters & The New Ones
The Prison Break Reboot Could Change Genres To Fit Today's True Crime Popularity
While many details have been kept under wraps, one of the things we know about the Prison Break reboot is that Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell will not return. It is believed that the reboot will feature an entirely new cast, but this does not rule out the possibility of cameos from original characters. The new show has been confirmed to take place in the original Prison Break universe, which means that if Mahone appears, he could connect the new and old cast. Mahone has so many skeletons in his closet that he could even have his own storyline.

This Prison Break Character's Death Killed The Show's Best Chance For A Great Spinoff
Prison Break's spin-off may bring original characters back. Still, Prison Break's best chance at a reboot was with John Abruzzi, who died too soon
One of the biggest criticisms of Prison Break was that after the compelling first season, the plot quickly grew far-fetched. Prison Break became a different show after season 1, so a dramatic change in genre is not unheard of for the show, and this could be a good move for the reboot. The surge in the popularity of true crime and police procedural shows means that the former FBI agent could play a key role if Prison Break took this route. A more true crime-focused Prison Break is the perfect place for somebody with as much potential as Mahone.
