Warning: Contains spoilers for Legion of X #9The X-Men's founder Xavier's massively inflated ego has continued to increase, leading to the father taking his son David for granted more than he ever has before.

Legion of X #8 sees David's longtime love interest, the precognitive mutant Ruth also known as Blindfold, accosting Charles in his home, calling him out for his historically terrible treatment of his son David, and telling him that David will forgive his fathers many sins if he would just go talk to him and take ability. Finally, in Legion of X #9 - written by Si Spurrier with art by Netho Diaz and Sean Parsons - Xavier ends up visiting his son Legion in the Altar, and to absolutely no one's surprise, almost immediately betrays him, at a time when all of Krakoa is being threatened by outside forces.

Xavier Can't Help But Betray His Only Son

Legion of X #9 Xavier Betraying his son Legion

To be fair to Charles, Legion is an incredibly complex person himself, and has acted as a major enemy of the X-Men on many occasions, often due to the unstable mental health he experiences due to his Omega-level reality warping abilities. However, Legion has been on a path to redemption since his arc in 2017's X-Men Legacy: Legion, and in the Krakoan Age the young, powerful mutant has stepped up even farther, creating an amazing astral space called the Altar for mutants to heal and find community.

Recently the anti-mutant group Orchis has orchestrated a multi-pronged attack against Krakoa, using Nightcrawler's sorceress mother Margali Szardos and an attack by the Technarchy to distract the Legionaires while Nimrod secretly hacks into Krakoa and takes control of the island. When Charles visits Legion in the Altar he asks David why a father can't visit his son without an ulterior motive. At the same time he immediately places a psychic trigger in David, betraying his son before he even attempts to have a peaceful conversation with him. the astral Technarchy attacks Krakoa. It is Xavier's incapacitation of his son that prevents a key defense of Krakoa from fighting back against Nimrod and Orchis.

Charles Xavier's continued disrespect and denial of his son Legion's humanity, growth, and inherent goodness not only proves that he remains Marvel's worst father, but his preemptive and unnecessary psychic attack on his son also leads to a serious attack on Krakoa and the X-Men that is yet to be resolved.
