It's not problematic if you read the novels. Then you would understand that Reacher's entire life is transitional. And that state of transition is imbedded within Reacher himself. There is a reason why his only possessions are a toothbrush and a port. It would be problematic if you tried changing Reacher just to make other characters a more permanent part of the show.
