Serena had to deal with quite a lot of things like her feelings towards Ash, whom she knew ever since their childhood, insecurities regarding leaving Kalos to become a coordinator and taking part in contests themselves (failure in first ever contest gave later one of best pokemon moments out of all companions of Ash) etc.
