Does Angelina Jolie Actually Sing In Maria?
I love this production. Costuming, voice training, the looks and mannerisms, the reactions and Mandrax. This a perfect libretto for an Opera, "La Divina".
I will it that I have not been a Callas fan, but I have ired her as a heroic figure who brought power and force to the voices of the roles she portrayed. Pure radiance.
53 is the tragically short life span, but not a tragic life. Even though Maria believed she was always in control, maybe this story suggests she was just that, but only in her mind. (She would have brought an interesting view to contemporary opera had she lived longer.)
Anytime you stop seeing the actor and can only hear and see the character, that actor has achieved the mission. The writers, Director, Jolie, knew how to create this story. They did so boldly. Fir me, not since "A Beautiful Mind" has there been such a successful mind bending and engaging story. You are engaged by genius.
Callas' life was the result of living, not as a victim, but as the mistress of her own destiny. Lonely and heavy is the head that wears the crown. That may have been the sacrificial price to pay for the gift of being such an unforgettable force.
Great film!
