Sappiness has ALWAYS been a part of sitcoms. So much so that we had “Very Special Episode(s)” in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. They stopped using the label but, a lot of sitcoms have some deeper moments of character building in them. Full House was basically BUILT around the concept.
