I think the ending fits well with the 80s mindset. Everyone was working for a better life. Our goal then was to provide for our family. Make their lives better. Hope was still well hopeful back then. Only people who grew up in the 80s would understand this. No the ending is not dark. It's what an 80s kid would want if he had a time machine.
