Everyone forgets that LOTR and the Hobbit was supposed to be this sort of narrative where Tolkien "found" these old texts from the first 3 ages (we are in age 7) and and translated them into modern English. There can be no such thing as "cannon" because any alterations are simply explained by updated translations or discovery of previously unfound texts.
