While a lot of what was said is true, some can be looked at as wether any scene or character would be central to the moment, to most it will always appear that Carlo caught a good beating from Sonny, garbage can ,kicks , throwing over the fence, it still looked like a beat down, as for Don Vito, he may have been shot at close range, but not point blank, and as Solozzo pointed out, they hit him with five shots and he's still alive, as you said it seems unlikely he would survive, but not impossible, also reasonable is that since his office is right across from the fruit vendor, it may have been a routine stop, before going home. Killing Don V. Also may have been a means to an end being that Solozzo might have been convinced that Sonny and Tom were "hot" for the narcotics deal that Don. V turned down. Other items can be looked at like the role the women played, like Connie, "pops never discussed business at the table" speaks toward some of her ignorance, and eventually Carlo used her as a prop to get closer to the family, "give him a living but don't ever discuss the family business" might have bothered him a little bit, and sought bigger things with Barzini. All in all ,no movie can be absolutely perfect, it's still all in the eyes of the viewer. Yes ,Pacino should have at least nominated for best actor.
