My personal take on this is that Craig has become increasingly 'up himself'. He seems to forget - whatever his ego is telling him - that without the Bond role he would not now be enjoying his worldwide celebrity. And it's Bond fans who have given him this status. It is factually incorrect to claim, as you do, that "Connery had already adapted Thunderball as his fourth official Eon-helmed Bond movie, so he essentially remade his own Bond movie with Never Say Never Again." Connery was not involved in the adapting, scripting, production or direction of either film. I find it bizarre that you consider otherwise.

Given the corner into which the Bond franchise has painted itself, namely the death of its protagonist, a complete reboot as an origin story, along the lines that Maibaum and Wilson proposed, seems the only logical solution. It also has the significant advantage that, in casting a much younger Bond, his tenure in the role can ideally encom several films in the series.
