Simon was arguably still alive when Christian happens upon him, you can see the lungs inflate and deflate as Christian is examining his body (this might be from the drugs he was on and in reality Simon was already dead, and because of the massive medical improbability that without the diaphragm Simon would be able to breathe.. however in the shot the lungs do get bigger and smaller, denoting breathing)
