Also, the reason the AMC character was so changed and underdeveloped relative to the comics was because of the firing of Frank Darabont.
Darabont was the original showrunner, however he had an ugly fallout with AMC. When he was fired midway season 2, both Laurie Holden and Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale) asked to be let go from the show as soon as possible in solidarity with Darabont who was a long time friend and collaborator of both.
