I honestly can't see NB returning. Because of the issues you pointed out. And right there, 1/3 of the Scoobies is down. Both DB as Angel and JM as Spike are too old to play vampires anymore. So either they can't return or they return as normal guys.
This reboot just seems like a return or SMG. And that just isn't good enough.

I gotta agree. Xander canonically comes in second with world saves, behind Buffy. Yet he has no character arc. After high school , he was the one character that received no storyline.
They foreshadowed, they implied, they set the ground work for many storylines involving him. But it never developed. I actually wonder what Joss's issue was with him. It seems purposeful.
