This entire article makes no sense. The planet was important as a rallying point as long it was undiscovered by the empire. Trying to defend it once it was discovered would have been sheerest idiocy. It also emphasizes how the Battle of Yavin change the complexion of the struggle. After the loss of the Death Star, the empire as a whole was forced to take the Rebellion as a serious threat and acted accordingly. This really drove home the underdog aspect of the Rebellion struggle against the empire. The dismissive Grand Moff Tarkin attitude was replaced by Palpatine ordering Vader to destroy the Rebellion yesterday.
