It's the multiverse, so this could be a way of ing the torch (yet again), to a next generation of X-Men from an alternate universe. Additionally, I don't think the original X-Men team will be the focus going forward. Disney has already set up mutants in the MCU with Ms. Marvel, plus there is the addition of Deadpool in the MCU, as well as a few others that will probably retconned as mutants (like they should have been originally). If anything, they'll add mutants and focus on one of the other mutant teams that exist, or another version of the X-Men.
