Denzel Washington’s portrayal of Malcolm X was undoubtedly worthy of an Oscar. Yet I think that acknowledging his powerful portrayal was simply too difficult for an institution in which the logics of racial and patriarchal capitalism still largely hold sway. Honoring the portrayal of one of the most righteous critics of U.S. racial capitalism certainly must have seemed “a bridge too far” for the artistic and political conceits of such a liberal bourgeois institution of “Modernity.”
