See AllSix Years After The Last Jedi, I've Finally Figured Out Why Its Luke Skywalker Story Was Really So Controversial
When interviewed about TLJ, Rian Johnson itted he couldn't think of anything else for Luke to do except toss his lightsaber. My point is that Johnson didn't have some deep philosophical plan for Luke. He had no plan for Luke, except to subvert expectations for the sake of subverting expectations. That's not a plan. That's lazy writing.
Johnson clearly didn't understand Luke (or his task in helming TLJ), and suggesting that Luke's archetype is the reason many of us were upset is also lazy writing and lazy analysis. TLJ is a bad film. There's no way to make it good. And it wasn't the fan's fault (because we didn't understand Johnson's genius). It was Johnson's fault (because he's not a genius).
