I always thought a more fitting ending would have been the "real" Stephen King as the Crimson King....with the earlier version just being another character written by him....Then he gives a proper definition to Roland of what the Tower actually is and gives his the option to proceed and begin his quest anew or not. Roland continues because he realizes his obsession was never the Tower but the journey to get to it.
