I think that you're confusing net- and gross-. Gross doesn't have anything to do with the input costs (So the 25 mil spent on it wouldn't matter.)
The whole thing with film earnings is kind of weird. I mean the right stuff which had come out like 8 years earlier was considered a flop but everybody seemed to have seen it and know all about it. Even a local car dealer used its name on their marquee. It felt like a hit despite its apparently having lost money?
Films can I have an impact beyond their gross earnings (or net earnings for that matter).
