Based on my own viewing I think it's not the show that didn't understand Daredevil, but this reviewer. The first two episodes at least were as good as anything I ever saw on the original. As good as Foggy and Karen were Netflix spent too much time on their melodrama and not enough actually with DD or his legal counterpart Matt. This article feels more like an "I don't want it to be as good so I'm choosing not to see it that way" feel, at least to me.
