The concept of the speed force has not always been part of the flash mythos. Prior to 1994 no one had ever heard of it. Wally had been the main flash for 9 years at that time, and Barry had been the flash for 29 years before that. Barry had been concerned that he was not even human when anymore prior to marrying Iris. Also Wally had to consume large quantities of calories to produce energy to run.
