I don't know if it has been revealed elsewhere but I now believe the rings the aes sedai go through to become accepted are bringing the women to the realm of the Aelfinn and Eelfin. There must have been a deal made long ago to arrange this and the aelfinn and eelfin get the women who don't come back as their reward.
