The series missed a huge opportunity with Xander. After the Halloween episode where they all turned into whatever they were dressed up as, Xander was dressed as a soldier. In a later episode, he mentions to Cordelia that he re everything he knew while that spell was on him, including the layout of the military base. From that point on, they should have written his character as though he'd had extensive military training.
